Of course I knew how much of a stickler for timing and being on time Peyton was so I always tried to arrive on the dot. I was a stickler for that too. I hadn't seen Peyton since we got off the phone this morning. She always looked much more beautiful in person. The screen of my phone always made her storm grey eyes look less bold and her dark brown ashy grey hair look faded instead of vibrant. I knocked in the door. Instead of her coming to the door her nurse, Sam came to the door.
"Hi Zach, come in! I'm just closing off Peyton's IV."
"Alright, hey Peyton!" I said smiling
"On the dot!" you reply laughing
I laugh too. Soon after your IV is closed off Sam leaves.
"You ready?" I ask
"But of course." you say
I start leading you to down the hall towards the staircase.
"There's no elevator to where we're going. Will you be okay?" I ask
"Ohhh, J know where we're going! I should be" you say
"Alright let's go then!" I say smiling as I take your hand to guide you.
Eventually we reach the rooftop. Sam helped me decorated with these soft hanging light-bulbs and a small seated table. I light a few candles because I remembered when you told me you wanted to do this and this was apart of your grand scheme. As we sat down at the table you spoke to me softly.
"Zach! It's beautiful"
"No, you are" I respond because it's true
Your hair is done in these super cute style and you outfit is on fire. I hair blows in the wind softly. Soon it'll get too cold as we emerge into late fall. Your eyes are lit by the candle-light along with your soft smile. After we finish our 'hospital food dinner' (the food isn't actually bad) you get up and look over the ledge of the roof.
"Do you remember when we used to come here as kids?"
"Yes. I do remember. Why adults let seven year olds play on a roof is beyond me though" I say
We laugh, it's true though.
"Floor thirteen perks I guess" you say
"Agreed" I say
"Do you remember Austin?"
Your words hang in the air. We both remember him clearly. It's just that it's not always something we wanted to remember.
"Speaking of Austin, he went back into surgery to try to remove the tumour he had a few weeks ago." I said
"Was it successful?" you ask
"No, it's really unfortunate." I say
"Oh, I miss him sometimes. Even when his attitude started to change and his humour got darker and stuff. Sometimes I wish things never changed." you whisper
"I know. I miss him sometimes too. We both know we lost him for a good reason though. He was starting to act like he ran the world, his humour got so dark. He got so dark." I said
"You're right. Maybe one day we'll cross paths again but for now i'm happy with just you" you finished smiling
We continued chatting and laughing until Sam came up and said it was too late to be up here. We cleaned up the roof and headed back down the hall to our rooms, promising we'd meet up tomorrow. I kissed your temple and hugged you goodnight.
You closed the door to your room and I continued down the hall to mine. That night I slept better than usual.
Thanks for the read! Please give me a vote if possible. I really liked writing about Austin and might do a bit more on him and maybe Zach and Peyton's past. We'll see, I have a lot of time on my hands this weekend. Thanks again!
