I am a law student, I am going to own my own firm someday, why the hell am I sitting here performing a séance for some sorority chick?
Nicholas looked up from the book of rituals he was using, he looked over at the petite brunette who was nervously rocking back and forth on her chair. "It says we should all hold hands," Nicholas flipped to the next page of the book, he scanned the pages before reaching for the brunette's frail hand. His other hand was placed into his friend, Tyler, who was currently looking like he was going to pass out in fear. For some odd reason, Tyler had always had some odd connection with all things supernatural, and once again that was going to come in handy.
Tower candles flickered as Tyler sucked in a deep breath. "Is everyone ready?" His voice was low. His eyes went to the ritual book after everyone had nodded. His amethyst eyes shut gently. "Tonight, we are here to contact the spirit of Thompson White. I will use myself as a medium, I will allow Thompson to come in and out of my body as he pleases. Thompson, if you are hear with us, give us a sign. Perhaps you could blow out one of these candles."
Before Tyler finished, a cold wind swept through the room, all of the candles were extinguished, leaving small plumes of smoke. Nicholas felt the hair on his arms raise up as a dark feeling overcame him.
"There's someone here," Tyler said. "I feel it, but I can't see it. Nicholas, I need you turn around, and tell me what you see." He looked over at Nicholas, who could feel a bead of sweat forming on his chiseled brow. "Nicholas," Tyler said again. From the look on Tyler's face, Nicholas was expecting to see something gruesome.
Nicholas looked once more at the brunette, who's hand was trembling in his. Nicholas turned and nearly fell from his chair. A young man, about his age, was standing in front of him, what appeared to be a bullet hole was centered on his forehead. Nicholas swallowed, admiring who he assumed to be the spirit of Thompson White.
"What?" The brunette questioned, nearly dropping hands with Nicholas and her blonde friend. "What do you see?"
"I see Thompson," Nicholas responded quietly, "he's standing right in front of me. Thompson, can you speak with us?" He watched as the spirit flickered in out, like a candle in the wind. His skin had a tinge of blue and his eyes were glossy white.
"Speak," Tyler said. After he had said that his head tilted back, mouth open. "I miss you, Lauren," a deep voice came from Tyler's mouth, clearly the summoning had worked. "But I want you to know that I'm okay, and I miss you."
As the voice of Thompson spoke through Tyler, Nicholas's eyes didn't leave the spirit in front of him. He watched as Thompson's mouth moved along with Tyler's, not sound leaving his pale blue lips. Nicholas's concentration was interrupted by the brunette starting to cry, his hand fell to the table with a light thud.
Just like that everything was lost, the spirit disappeared, and Tyler's body slumped back into its original position. Nicholas groaned, slamming the ritual book shut. "Damn it!"
"Wait!" The girl shouted, her light eyes bleary with tears. "What happened!"
"You broke the link with your crying!" Nicholas exclaimed angrily. Jesus, if I'm gonna have to do this, I at least need people to work with what I'm giving them! Nicholas stood up and began gathering the things he had set out.
"What do you mean I broke the link?" Her tears had begun to roll down her red cheeks as she stood up. "Can't you bring him back?"
"No!" Nicholas picked up the candles and placed them in his bag. "We'd have to go through the entire process again, and I'm not sure if we'll be able to access his spirit again." He picked up his bag and began walking towards the door, Tyler followed behind him, looking rather annoyed.
