Baz and Simon are both nine years old in the beginning, Simon's at an orphanage of course. No Vampire, and No Humdrum Au. The orphanage is coincidentally right across the road from Baz 'Victorian' mansion. Why you ask? Plot Convenience is the answer.

Baz's POV
"113... 114... 115..." I counted the bricks as I walked slowly around The Wall. This was how it went every day. I'd get bored at home, so after practicing my violin I'd head out the door and walk around what I had taken to call, The Wall.
I used to go back home when it started to get dark, but now that I was a little older, I liked the dark.
Sighing I picked up a stick. The Wall always had an enchanting feel to it, but when you'd been seeing it for years it could get just as boring as it is at home.
I was about to start walking back to my house across the road when I heard a noise. It wasn't sudden, or very loud.
In fact, I was pretty sure it had been there the whole time. I was just too lost in my thoughts to notice it.
I was all too aware of what the noise was though. It was unmistakable.
Crying.
Instantly my mind went straight to what my father had told me years ago.
~Flashback~
"Father. What is behind that huge wall?"
"The people behind that wall are of no worry of ours. Never conversate with them, they are below our level. Besides, they are all Normals anyway, Mages never get abandoned... magick's too pure."
~End Of Flashback~
Later I had learnt it was an orphanage. Daphne taught me all about it.
With hardly any hesitation I headed towards the sound of crying. Normal or not, they were still human.
After a minute I located the voice.
I sat down of the other side of the wall and leant my head against the brick.
"Hey, why are you crying?" I said without my usual sneer. Inwardly I cringed, my voice sounded so different to how I normally spoke.
The person on the other side sniffed.
"There are a lot of reasons." He (Because now I was sure it was a he) replied.
"I'm a good listener." I heard myself say.
He told me everything after that. All about how he was abandoned at birth and couldn't remember his parents. How he was bullied on a daily basis, and hardly got anything to eat. How he didn't have any friends because everyone at the care home shied away from him.
I sat through it all and listened, just as I had promised.
There was silence for a while after he was done. I said the only thing I could think of to break it.
"Well you have a friend now. And I promise to come here every day to talk to you, even if I can never see you."
He stayed silent and I was sure he was smiling, his tears long since dried up.
I continued. "What's your name? Because of safety I can't tell you mine but you can call me Baz."
Finally he spoke up again. "Baz... I like it. You can call me by my last name I guess seeing as it's really common. I already know two other people in the orphanage with my last name. It's Snow."
