Nancy Flintheart was an old woman, she was also a widow with children and grandchildren. People who knew her would describe her as a woman who waits, a woman whose smile holds little to no sign of happiness. She was never the same after the death of her husband, a death so sudden she would've never expected it would be so soon. Nancy knew her husband was selfless, he had always been that way, she cared for him regardless. The pair had met as children, when she fled from her country, at that time she had no family, they all had perished either before the long, dreadful boat ride or during it. She was an orphan who found a bright and kind child who help care for her.Nancy stared out into her garden, gaillardia, his favorite flower. She felt wet tears begin to form in her eyes, the weeping woman, she was called. She heard a knock.
"Come in," She told the person on the other side of the door, her voice sounded hollowed and hoarse.
One of her daughters, Ani, entered the room. Ani reminded Nancy much of like how she was, calm yet joyful.
"Mother, there is a letter for you, a man named Sergeant Frederick said with was from father," Her daughter informed her, you could see a flash of sadness in Ani's eyes at the mention of her father.
"Mason?" Nancy asked, why after all these years would a letter come now? Had is been forgotten? "C-can I have it?" She asked her daughter, she wanted to see what was written to her. Ani nodded her head as she handed her mother the letter, Nancy gingerly opened the letter.
"Dear my sweet Gaillardia, this may be the final letter I send you. I still hold many regrets, like not being with you. Our children will grow up without me, and you will be alone. I never wanted you to leave you alone, I had and will always love the way you smile when I teased you, I will always and forever love the way you worry when I am out during a storm playing in the wet grounds like a child. I know I may never see your smile, your face, I know I may never hear your voice or feel your kisses before we fall asleep. I will love you, and even though I am gone I want you to keep smiling, for me. I know one day I will see you again. Love Mason Flintheart."
Nancy felt wet, sappy tears fall from her face, and for the first time in forever her smile held pure merriment.
