I sat outside the Conflict Room, my back pressed against the wall opposite of the door.
I could hear two men arguing inside, along with a screaming girl. I smirked to myself, shaking my head. She was digging herself a deeper hole.
The door flew open and two Amity men dragged her out. They set her on her feet, and once she gained her balance, she shook off their grips.
"I can escourt myself out, thank you." She huffed.
"Ellie," I laughed, "Have you learned your lesson?"
"Don't," She warned, walking away from me.
I caught up to her and looped an arm through hers. She was taller than me, but not by much. It wasn't hard to match her fast strides.
"What did you do this time?"
"I'll start from the beginning. But first, I'm starving. Let's grab something to eat."
It was lunch time anyway, so we made our way to the cafeteria and grabbed the table closeset to the huge windows that illuminated the room. We sat on oppisite sides, facing each other. She filled her plate quickly and started digging in.
I picked at my food, my thoughts clouded by the Dauntless man that had attacked me. I couldn't stop thinking about him, about his tattooes, his piercings - everything. It was only a few days ago, and I haven't ridden the train since. Not that I was afraid of him..or maybe I was...but I've also been busy. There's been a lot of fruits to pick in so little time.
"Okay, so," Ellie began, swallowing her food. "I told myself that I had to lose a little weight, because I want to look really good for the Choosing Ceremony-"
"That's, like, months away." I interrupted. "And you look fine. You don't need to be on a diet."
"Can I please just tell my story?"
I rolled my eyes, "Carry on."
"As I was saying," She glared at me. "I stopped eating the bread, because it's my biggest weakness. I was going strong for two days, and then I realized how angry I've gotten. Have you noticed?"
I shrugged. "Kinda?"
"Don't lie to me, Scar. I know I've been a bitch. I'm perfectly okay with that. Anyway, Todd, you know Todd right? Well I think he has a crush on me. He's been following me around, seranding me. This morning I tried to get away from him, but he wouldn't leave me alone. He just kept playing his banjo."
"Really?"
"Yes! So I turned around and shoved him away from me. I told him to stick his banjo up his ass. Then, I guess someone went and grabbed those two burly guys and they shoved me in the Conflict Room."
"Do I have to remind you that the bread is laced with the peace serum?" I asked, biting into my apple.
"I'm not stupid."
"That's why you've been bitchy. Everyone else is so hopped up on it that they don't realize how loopy and happy they are. Poor Todd was just being himself."
"How much bread do you eat? Jesus, how much bread does Todd eat?! He probably gets off on it..."
"I try to eat as little as possible. I'm, like, in between happy and bitchy. It's a medium."
"I'm just going to do that from now on." She stated, grabbing a bun.
I nodded in agreement. The conversation lulled for a minute, the two of us just enjoying our food. Suddenly, a bell chimed. It signaled the end of lunch and the return to our jobs. Today, Ellie and I were due to report for distribution within the city. It was that time of the month where Amity passed out the food supply for each faction.
