Y/N was giving his mother her medicine. Recently, M/N had fallen ill and was unable to continue working in the bookshop that she had had built next to their home. M/N finished her medicine and asked, "Y/N have you been getting enough rest? I've barely seen you around the house. You're always out and about, working." Y/N said, "I don't have time for rest. I have to do as much work as possible to earn enough money to pay rent, pay for your medicine and keep the bookstore open. Don't forget I also have to deal with all my new Celestial Spirits." Upon receiving his grimoire, Y/N learned that his magic allowed him to summon the Celestial Spirits of the constellations from the Celestial Spirit World. Some of them had appeared on their own to form contracts with him so that they could serve him, but several of them proved difficult to deal with. M/N laughed slightly, "You have such a wonderful form of magic. You should be using it to help others, not busy yourself. The Magic Knights...." Before she could say anything else, Y/N held out his hand to stop her, "I already told you that I don't want to have anything to do with the Magic Knights." M/N said, "But you could do so much for the kingdom and you can master your magic if you joined. Plus, you can gain more money than you ever would if you worked any other job." Y/N looked away. M/N sighed, "At least consider taking the exam for the Magic Knights." Y/N asked, "Why are you so insistent that I join? You never tried so hard to get me to do something before. And it better not have anything to do with my father." M/N looked down, "Well, it's because I've had a terrible feeling these past few years. I feel as if though something terrible is going to happen to the kingdom soon. When I was a Magic Knight, I felt fear many times, but trust me, this is worse than it was all those years ago. Please, you can protect the kingdom with your wonderful magic." Y/N looked at his mother, who had more passion in her eyes than he had seen since she had fallen ill. Y/N carefully considered the options and the pros and cons before coming to a decision, "Uh, fine. I'll take the exam. For you, if nothing else." M/N smiled brightly and gave her son a tight hug.
A few days before the Magic Knights Entrance exam was to be taken, Y/N had packed his bags, made sure his broom was working properly and received some new clothes from one of his Spirits from the Celestial World. He was wearing a white, sleeveless shirt with a blue star that led to the neckline and a light blue jacket with golden linings, and long, blue, fingerless gloves. Porlyusica and M/N stood on the edge of V/N as he was about to leave. M/N said, "Make sure to take care of yourself and send me plenty of letters." Y/N said, "I'll make sure to do so." Porlyusica said, "Make sure you get lots of money so I can make the medicine for your mother." Y/N nodded, "I'll make sure." He got on his broom. M/N said, "Well, here you go." Y/N nodded as he rode his broom to the royal capital.
Y/N was walking the streets of the royal capital, exploring the area before he had to go to the arena to take the entrance exam. As he was walking towards a bookstore, his grimoire began to glow and shake. Y/N looked around and saw two boys around his age standing in front of a food stand. One of them was a tall boy with black hair and a blue pendant and the other was a shorter boy, slightly taller than himself, with gray hair. Y/n was confused as to why his grimoire was reacting to them, but chose to ignore, believing that it meant nothing important. He continued walking around the city until it came time for him to walk to the arena to take the exam. He held out his grimoire for the proctor to register. The proctor said, "Alright, you're registered. You're number 167." Y/N went to join the rest of the candidates in the arena. There were several other wizards standing around, as well as a large number of anti-birds. Y/N remembered what he had read about them in the past, "Anti-birds, a special species of birds that are attracted to a lack of magic. The less magic you have, the more they'll avoid you." As he spoke, several anti-birds moved to avoid him, shocking several onlookers. After a few minutes, the Magic Knights Captains arrived and announced the beginning of the exam. William Vangeance, the Captain of the Golden Dawn, the Clover kingdom's strongest Magic Knights Squad, spoke to the candidates, "Welcome everyone to the Magic Knights Entrance Exam. In this exam, you will tested on several different aspects to prove that you are qualified to join the Magic Knights. The Captains will be observing you all and will decide whether or not they will ask you to join. Now, without further delay. Let the first test begin. Magic tree, descend." Once he finished speaking, a Magic tree came down from the ceiling, providing brooms for each of the examinees. Vangeance explained, "Broom riding is one of the most basic abilities of a wizard. It is also how Magic Knights travel. Needless to say, being unable to do something as simple as this is unsuited to be a Magic Knight." The candidates got on their brooms and began flying. Y/N hovered a little bit over the ground on his broom, not wanting to show how skilled he was with a broom. Luckily for him, several of the captains were looking at another candidate. Y/N recognized him as the black haired boy that he had seen earlier. He looked around and saw that the gray haired boy was also there, but he was unable to get his broom off the ground. Y/N thought to himself, "Hm, that's strange. Even the lowest of commoners should at least have enough strength to get the broom off the ground for at least a moment." Y/N decided to ignore the two boys and continued to complete the tests with as little effort as necessary. Though he had promised that he would take the exam, he had never promised to do his best. Y/N yawned as the tests came to a close. He would rather be at home with a good book rather than having to fight someone. Y/N was suppose to find an opponent to face for the last part of the exam, but decided to watch another match before. The first match was between the gray haired boy and a man that used bronze magic. The bronze mage created a sphere that served as offense and defense, but the gray haired boy managed to negate his spell using a large black sword. Y/N was awestruck. He had never seen a sword that was capable of negating magic completely. It had peaked his interest, but he decided not to delve into it any further since the boy had done terribly in all the other tests and would most likely fail the overall exam, leading him to return to his own village. Once Y/N failed, he would also return to his village and the two would never see each other again. It was true that he was bothered that he would never be able to learn the secret as to why his grimoire began to glow near the boy or why his swords negated magic, but his dislike for socializing overruled that. Y/N continued to watch the other matches. The black haired boy managed to defeat a noble in a single attack. "Whoa, Yuno. That's amazing!" Y/N turned to see the gray haired boy cheering for his friend. Y/N thought, 'Huh, so his name must be Yuno.' Y/N was suddenly pulled out of his thoughts when someone tapped his shoulder. He turned to see a noble man wearing a cocky smirk staring at him, "My, it seems you haven't been eliminated yet. You commoners need to learn your place. How about a duel with me?" Y/N turned away, "I can guarantee that I am several hundred times more powerful than you could ever be, but I will accept your challenge out of pure necessity." The two of them were quickly surrounded by spectators. The noble pulled out his grimoire and began his attack, "Let's see how you deal with my wind magic." He launched an attack that directly hit Y/N, but the boy was unfazed. Y/N stared at his opponent, "Is that what qualifies as an attack in the noble realm? I could cause more damage with a hand fan." Y/N opened his grimoire and prepared to summon one of his spirits, "Celestial Magic: Open, Gate of the Golden Bull, Taurus." A golden circle appeared on the ground and from it came a giant humanoid bull.
Taurus looked around, "Ohhhh!! Look at all the pretty ladies!!" Y/N said, "Less passion, more bashing. Take that guy down." Taurus turned to his opponent, "Alright. Time to show my moo-ves!" Taurus swung his ax and knocked the noble out of the stadium. Y/N huffed, "Annoying idiot." While he had looked away, Taurus had started bothering the women spectators. Taurus said, "Oh, so many beaoootiful ladies!!" Y/N sighed and smacked his face, "I should have known. This guys a major perv. Well, at least that lowers my chances of getting picked. Taurus, gate close." In a flash of golden light, Taurus disappeared. Y/N moved to the side of the colosseum and watched the rest of the matches. Before he could though, the gray haired boy jumped to him, "Wow!! That was amazing! I've never seen magic like that before! By the way, I'm Asta! Who are you?" Y/N was obviously bothered by the other boy's introduction, but he didn't seem to take the hint, "I'm Y/N." Asta smiled, "What type of magic did you use? You brought out some big bull man!" Y/N said, "It's called Celestial Magic. It's incredibly rare. That's all you need to know. Not like we'll need to get along in the future." Asta frowned, "Oh, man." "Asta, stop bothering him." The two of them turned to see that Yuno had come to them. Yuno and Asta walked away. Y/N went back to watching the rest of the battles. Eventually, the battles were done and the candidates gathered to see who was chosen to join the Magic Knights. Y/N was lined up with the rest of the candidates. Yuno had been chosen to join the Golden Dawn, the strongest squad in the kingdom. When Asta went up to be chosen, Yami, the captain of the Black Bulls, the worst squad in the kingdom, chose him. Yami turned to Y/N, "By the way, I'm also taking the weird guy with the bull man." Y/N was shocked when Yami announced that and grabbed his jacket. Yami smirked, "This is going to be fun." Y/N swallowed his own spit at Yami's words.
