Crutchie was sitting up in bed. He had been trying to fall back asleep for the past hour now, but he kept sneezing and coughing. He clearly had a fever, since he wasn't feeling the greatest right now.
The blonde haired newsboy was trying to stay quiet so he didn't wake anyone up due to his coughing and sneezing. He covered his mouth before he sneezed this time, in an attempt to muffle it.
2 bunk beds in one room, there were 4 other rooms too...but he just so happen have to share a room with Jack.
Jack was awoken by Crutchie's sneezing (like a kitten) and coughing. He lit the candle that was by his bed, he was a bottom bunk just under Racetrack. "Hey...Crutchie? Are you feeling okay?" He asked quietly...enough for the blonde haired boy to hear.
"Yes..I'm fine Jacky." Crutchie replied, letting out another bad cough.
Jack frowned as he got up, walking over to Crutchies bed as he sat by him...Crutchie was leaning against the wall.
"I'm sorry about wake you.""Don't be sorry. It's okay." Jack said assuringly...he was never one to show his emotions often. He held his arms out to Crutchie.
Crutchie was hesitant before he put his arms around Jack's torso and relaxed a little.
"I don't want to get you sick." He said softly.
"I'll be fine." Jack replied, pulling Crutchie into his lap.
Crutchie blushed a bit...but you couldn't really tell due to the dark and his fever already dusted his cheeks with a tint of red.
"I'll sell your papers tomorrow." Jack hummed. "You should rest."
"I cant..." Crutchie murmured.
Jack felt bad knowing Crutchie couldn't fall asleep...he took his vest off then his blue long sleeve which he always had the sleeves rolled up. "Here, it might be big on ya but it might help you."
Crutchie nodded, putting Jack's shirt on was like paradise to the smaller newsboy; yes it was a bigger on him but he liked it. He rested his head on Jack's shoulder. Jack wrapped his arms around Crutchie's waist, leaning back hoping Crutchie would fall asleep.
Before Jack knew it, he heard Crutchie snoring softly. Jack smiled, holding his best friend close. His brother...no he didn't think of him as a brother anymore but rather as a...lover. Though it'd have to be hidden, he would do anything for the small boy.
Jack relaxed, his back against the wall...which wasn't very comfy but he made it work; he fell asleep for a few hours.
That following morning; Jack was the first to wake up as usual. Jack carefully got up, laying Crutchie back down on the bed, he still had a fever...which upset Jack; he just wanted the boy to feel better.
As Jack went to leave with the others...he heard a tired voice call his name.
It was Crutchie.
Jack turned on his heels. "Hey...Crutchie, I didn't know you were awake."Crutchie rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. "Is it time for you to go already?" He asked softly.
"Yes...I'm sorry, Crutchie. But hey you have my shirt, I'll be back before you know it" Jack said with a positive attitude.
Crutchie nodded, "okay...see you soon." He said before he laid back down, trying to fall back to sleep.
An hour or so passed, and Jack was distracted...thinking about Crutchie. He would do anything if it meant Crutchie felt better.
"Hey Davey...Can I uh...ask a favor?"Davey smiled as he looked Jack up and down. "The Jack Kelly? Asking for help?"
Jack shot a glare, "it's important!"
"Okay okay...what is it?" Davey asked.
"Can you sell the rest of these papes? Please." Jack practically begged...Davey nodded, taking the papers.
Jack practically ran back to the place they all had been staying at. He was sneaky to walk in, in case Crutchie was asleep.
He wasn't. Jack walked into the room; and Crutchie was currently trying to fall asleep.
"You feeling any better?" Jack asked, smiling softly when he noticed how happy Crutchie got when Jack shown his presence.
Crutchie sat up and smiled. "A little...did you sell all the papers?"
"No I asked Davey to...so I could come check on you." Jack said as he sat by Crutchie."Jack...can you tell me a story...? You know like when you first found me."
Jack smiled weakly; remembering that day they were like 11. Crutchie had recently gotten jumped by the Delanceys, when Jack happen to walk by...he found Crutchie bleeding out, so he took him back to the place they had stayed.
Ignoring the others; Jack tended to Crutchies wounds as he told him a story. A story about a dog..."Of course, Crutchie.." Jack said softly.
"Once...there was this chocolate lab...stunning dog...he had a hurt leg, like you. This dog would walk miles...searching for a family." Jack paused before continuing. "One day, a little boy...named Johnny saw this dog and told his dad. The dog began to do silly little tricks. Anything to get taken in, he was a real sweet dog...his dad agreed. Johnny and his father agreed on the name...Charles."Crutchie was smiling the entire time. "That dog sounds just like me! Name and everything...besides I'm human."
Jack smiled, "yeah...that was the story I told you when I tended to your wounds when we were kids."
Crutchie paused as he processed. "It was...I remember that...you made me laugh when I wanted to cry—you even threatened the Delanceys.." he said with a small laugh.
Before Jack could even process, Crutchie threw his arms around him. "I love you Jack.."Jack was surprised by this as he hugged back. "I love you too, Crutchie." He said softly. His heart pounded...he never thought he would be able to tell him. Considering, all the bad things in the world...he got to confess. Holding the love of his life in his arms. The boy who can smile and brighten your day with his laugh or the way he jokes about his leg; the way he threatens the delanceys or even Wiesel with his crutch. He never thought he would say it to the person he never thought he would find.
Jack Kelly, finally confessed to him.
The leader of their union...finally got himself together and confessed.
