TW: mentions of rape and abuse
This is a flashback scene that sets the stage for Luke's personality
3 years and 7 months before Luke met Tan:
"You know this is all your fault, right?" Alpha Leon asked, blood dripping down his chin and all over his bare chest. He pointed at the dead forms of Luke's parents and sibling, an evil smile on his face. "You killed them when you tried to run, pup."
Luke's wolf was howling, begging him to run to his family and hold them as they breathed their final breaths, but Leon wouldn't let him. He'd already been thrown away from them once, and there was no point since there was no chance he'd be able to save them.
"Let this be an example to all of you!" Alpha Leon yelled to the surrounding families, young pups forced to watch because their Alpha wouldn't stand for the weakness of them hiding their faces. "If you try to run away like a coward, your families will pay the price! Your selfishness will kill the people you love, and if you try to run again, your mate will be my next target."
That made Luke freeze, his mind flashing back to that fateful day barely nine months before...
He'd never met his mate before, but he smelled him when the Blood Moon pack attacked them.
The Blood Moon pack was the biggest in the country, and it was known as a peaceful pack. That was, until Alpha Leon went insane after his mate died and decided to try to target other packs so he could feel like he was in control. However, the Blood Moon pack did not welcome the attack with surrender and instead fought back, defeating their pack, the North River pack, easily.
Luke was eighteen so he could sense his mate, and he spotted him in the group of fighter wolves in the Blood Moon pack. He wondered why his mate didn't scent him or even look at him, but he assumed that his mate must've been younger than him.
Alpha Jonas, leader of their opposing pack, told Alpha Leon to go back to their territory and they'd leave them alone, otherwise he'd murder the Alpha where he stood and take his pack.
Leon did not appreciate that, but he stepped down and ordered his wolves to return to their territory.
Luke was in his wolf form and strayed from his pack to follow his mate, watching as his mate shifted back to his human form. And damn, he was beautiful.
"Did you see how easy they stood down?" his mate asked with a small laugh. "If that's the strongest pack you have to go against, then I think you've got this whole Alpha thing in the bag, Calix!"
One of the wolves that his mate was walking with shook his head as he grabbed a bag from behind a tree and grabbed a shirt and pair of pants.
"Yeah, but it's not like they had much of a choice," the Alpha wolf, Calix, responded. "I just wish that it was as easy to find my mate as it was to beat that pack."
Luke's mate snorted. "As if I even had that chance right now," he said, not knowing that his mate sat a few yards away, hidden from sight. "Only another seven months until I'll be an adult!"
"You're the only one I know that gets super excited about your birthday," a female Alpha said, appearing from behind a tree in a tight shirt and shorts. "But I'll bully you later. We need to get home."
The other two nodded and ran off after their friend, heading toward their territory.
Luke thought about that day often, and especially now that his mate was being threatened by the Alpha that had just murdered his family.
