THE FUNERAL

SEASON 1, EPISODE 1

BROOKLYN FITZGERALD LAY ON HER STOMACH WITH HER LEGS RAISED IN THE AIR. 'Good Girls Go Bad' by Cobra Starship was blaring through her room as she scribbled down the answer to her final pre-Calc equation. As she closed her math book and pushed it aside so that she could grab her English book, her phone rang causing a groan to emit from her mouth. The look of annoyance on her face quickly disappeared when she saw her brother's picture pop up on her screen.

With a smile on her face, she answered the call. "Hello, brother of mine. Long time no talk. How's Rosewood?" Brooklyn's brows frowned when her brother remained silent, the only proof of him still being on the other line being the quiet sniffles he released. "Ez, are you crying? What's wrong?"

"She's... she's gone," Ezra answered vaguely.

"Who? Who's gone?"

"Alison. She's dead. They found her body." At that, her heart sank. Alison was a girl that her brother had met in the late spring, early summertime of two thousand nine. The girl was blonde with blue eyes, pretty, confident, and a liar. The girl had told Ezra and Brooklyn that she was 18 when in reality, she was 15. While Brooklyn was disappointed when she found out the truth, Ezra was furious. His face had turned beat red and if he had been in a cartoon, loads of steam would've been coming from his ears.

After finding out Alison lied to him about her age, Ezra confronted her about it and broke things off with her on September first, two thousand nine. There was no other significance behind that date other than it being the day that Alison DiLaurentis went missing. It was now a year later and Alison had been found. Unfortunately for her friends and family, the young girl was dead.

"When's the funeral?" Brooklyn asked quietly, not trusting her voice to stay strong.

Ezra lightly cleared his throat. "Uh, next week."

"I'll be there."

"Lyn, you don't need to be."

"You're right," she agreed. "But I will be. I didn't know her for very long but she was my friend, Ezra. You and I know that I don't make those very often."

"What are you going to tell mom?"

Brooklyn shrugged. "I'll... make something up. I'll be there in two days."

"Okay..."

"I love you, Ez."

"You too."

"Ezra." Brooklyn hated whenever someone replied with a 'you too' after she told them she loved them because it made her feel like they didn't mean it.
