"That guilt will lay with you, not me

"That guilt will lay with you, not me." The anger in her tone rose with every word she spoke. Her anger radiated from her small frame and regret started to creep into my thoughts. Her action that followed her words shocked me out of my anguish and grief about my sister for a moment.

I stared at the ring that had landed by my feet. A few tears slipped down my cheeks as I bent down to retrieve the engagement ring I had painstakingly picked out a few months ago. My relationship crumbled by my own actions and I didn't know how to move forward.

My feet stayed rooted to the floor as I rolled the ring between my fingers. Footsteps made me blink back to the present and I hastily wiped the stray tears.

"Cole?" A deep voice said from behind me. I slowly turned to find myself staring up at Jules.

Jules towered over me at six foot seven. I considered myself tall but standing next to Jules could knock anyone's ego down a few pegs. His dark curly hair was pulled in a bun at the crown of his head with loose tendrils framing his face. His green eyes glowed bright as he took in the sight of me.

"Hey Jules." I said with a flat voice.

"I just spoke to Aven. I'm sorry about what happened." He walked up to me and placed his hand on my shoulder in a gesture of empathy.

"Yeah." was the only response I could muster.

"What is the plan?" He asked as he stepped back.

"What do you mean?" I said with confusion.

"Well, Aven said she didn't resurface and that Alena's magic was blocked. Something doesn't add up to me. I'm surprised Alena hasn't come up with a plan of action already. She's always planning our next move."

At the sound of her name I nearly doubled over with the pain that washed over me. Jules caught my reaction and eyed me suspiciously. His eyes traveled over me and caught the motion of my right hand as I rolled the ring between my fingers.

"That's Alena's engagement ring." He said quietly.

"She, um, we. I. Her." I couldn't speak coherently. My grief for my sister morphed into grief over what happened between Alena and me.

"Aven clearly missed a piece of the story, so I'm going to ask you to fill it in." Jules said in a low, almost threatening voice.

"I asked her to help Gemma. She went over to stop Gemma from jumping off the dock after Aven but she failed. Gemma jumped and I blamed her. I shut her out." I said in a whisper.
