Chapter Four: Heartbreak Girl
// Shady's Point of View //I spent the next week recovering, hoisting myself around on crutches. May and her posse left me alone, for the most part. They still sneered rude remarks and insults under their breath when I passed them in the hallway or when I sat down in class. Jack and May were acting like any other happy couple. Just the sight of them together made me sick.
Every day, every single day, May met up with Jack at his locker and they would make out against his locker. Purposely sliding onto mine. I literally wanted to slap her in the face.
The rescheduled football game was supposed to take place on Halloween, and no one was complaining. No teenager wanted to be home to pass out candy.
Well, except for me.
I would have done anything to not have to go to that game. Jack was going to be playing and he's going to be glistening with sweat and I was not going to be able to control myself. It was the thirtieth of October, the day before the game. All the football players had been excused from classes so they could practice. So basically I was stuck in class, without Jack.
During lunch, I sat with Taylor, Forest, Jack, May, Azalea, and Destiny. Ever since my 'accident' May and Jack had been spending a lot of time together.
I couldn't walk by his house without seeing them together. Whether it was on his couch or against the grand piano in the front room, it didn't matter to them. The more public the better.
Anyway so during lunch, May mentioned something that caught my attention and woke me up from my day-nightmare.
"This year, I've decided to go to prom with Matt." May said.
"Why Matt and not me?" Jack asked, pouting unhappily.
May struggled to find something to say. "Because you're going with me." I said. May gave me a questioningly look, she was confused as to why I was covering for her.
"I am?" He asked me, confused.
"Yeah! Don't you remember a couple of weeks ago when you promised you would go with me?" I asked him, trying to sound hurt.
"Yeah! Of course I'm going with you!" He said, backtracking. Jack still looked supremely confused, but he let the subject drop.
I gave May a look that said, 'explain later'. She gave her boyfriend a frightened look, though Jack didn't notice.
As we were walking home, Azalea decided to come over. "I'm following you guys home." she said. Taylor seemed happy with the new plan.
I opened the door and let the others inside. Azalea and Taylor snuck up to Taylor's room, and Forest just stayed downstairs.
I went up to my room with Destiny basically spitting questions at me.
"What was up with you and Jack at lunch?" She asked. My face flushed bright red.
"Um, nothing. I was covering for May." I replied.
She stopped dead in her tracks. "Why would you do that?" She asked, genuinely curious.
I sighed. "I did it because now May owes me and she needs to give me an explanation to why she's not going to prom with Jack, I can get proof that her plan is real and that she's going to hurt Jack." I told her, giving up. "It's also because I really want him to ask me, I want him to return the feelings I have for him, though I know that's not going to happen. Saving him from May is the least I could do, right?" Destiny smiled a small smile at me.
Destiny gave me a big hug, and I wrapped my arms around her. "Every time he touches me, it feels like electricity is shooting through me and when he hugs me I feel safe and when I'm with him I think that everything is going to be okay, even though it clearly isn't." I told her, my voice cracking and tears escaping my eyes.
