Hey, we need to talk.

That was the text message Sam received from Nekolette as he was completing the last of the reports Kalysta would need for her upcoming video conference.

Alright. I'll pick up some Chinese on the way home and we can sit and talk. He replied.

I mean now, Sam. She replied almost instantly.

He frowned in confusion. What could she want to talk about that was so urgent? He didn't wait to find out, he called her immediately, "Hey, is everything okay, Lettie?"

The woman he thought of as an older sister sighed heavily, indicating that something wasn't right and she was stressing out about it, big time. "Yes and no," she replied.

"I've got about 20 minutes before my boss gets back from her lunch break, will this need more time than that?"

She shook her head but remembered that he couldn't see her, "No, it shouldn't. But then again, that all depends on your answers."

"Lettie, just spill it... What's going on?"

"Its Miranova Enterprises that you work for, isn't it? Kalysta specifically?"

His fingers froze at the keyboard in front of him. He wasn't expecting that question at all.

"How do you know that?"

"Mom is at Kal's taking care of Kolby for her. She saw some sketches he made that had you, Alex, and your parents all in them...She heard you talking to Kal and Kolby earlier... she could smell you on Kal... Why wouldn't you tell me this? I thought we trusted each other...you've kept this from us for a year, Sammy..."

"Lettie, I do trust you, all of you. I only learned what her first name is today and even if I had known sooner I don't get why you're making it out to be such a big deal..."

"Uh, how about because she doesn't know that you know us? She doesn't know that you know Nik. If she were to find out, she'd freak out, Sammy. Nik doesn't know about Kolby and we've kept it that way for a reason..."

"I know that, Lettie, and you know I would never tell Nik anything. I don't even like him, you know this so I don't get what the big deal is when the biggest deal should be that she's my mate."

"Sam, sweetheart...you know that's not possible. She was gifted Nik-"

"You don't think I know that, Lettie?" He interrupted. "He was gifted an amazing, beautiful creature and look what he did to her in return."

"I know what he did to her, Samuel!" She snapped, "I, better than anyone know what he has done to her! I have been there to pick up the pieces! I have been there to help raise my nephew! I'm the one who has spent years making sure they've been safe and secure!"

"I understand that," he cooed apologetically, "and because of that, you know she deserves better than what he's done to her. Lettie, she deserves someone who will cherish her, love her, appreciate her, support her. Someone who would go to the ends of the world to keep her happy." He let out a soft sigh as he pinched the bridge of his nose, the phone tucked between his ear and his shoulder, "I know she's already had a mate. I don't know or understand why she is my mate despite having already been given a mate. Maybe it's because she's human, maybe the Goddesses have taken pity on her, maybe the Goddesses see me fit to take care of her, maybe they just want to piss Nik off, who knows, but she is my mate, Lettie. And I'm not giving up on her. I refuse to. Kolby is the most amazing kid I have ever met, and Kalysta is the most devine and beautiful creature I could ever imagine."

Her hesitance was clear through the other end of the phone, "You're absolutely positive that she is your mate? No question whatsoever?"

"I am. My wolf is. We are. This isn't a crush or a fling, Lettie, this is real. I have never felt this way towards anyone, ever. She is our mate. I don't understand how it is possible, but I've accepted it and that it's happened for a reason, and if I have to I will spend every single day for the rest of my life showing her that I will not leave her."
