'Was this a planned pregnancy?' The doctor asks.
'No.' Elizabeth shakes her head.
'Does the father know?' Emily queries.
'My husband,' Elizabeth states, 'and no,' she exhales, 'we've had a few false positives in the past so I wanted to be sure before I told him.'
'I'm just going to do a blood draw and then we'll do an ultrasound.' Emily tells her.
'Okay.' Elizabeth nods. Emily sanitises her hands and puts some gloves on.
'If you just lie back for me.' Emily states. Elizabeth does as she's told and Emily gets a tourniquet out. She ties it around Elizabeth's arm just above the inner elbow. She presses onto the inner elbow to find a vein. Once's she found one, she cleans the area with an antiseptic sponge. 'Do you and your husband have kids already?'
'Two.' Elizabeth nods. 'A girl and a boy. Harper and Aaron.' A few minutes pass. Emily has taken the blood needed.
'I'll get these sent to our lab. Results should be back in an hour.' Emily says. 'So I will do the ultrasound now and then we'll wait for the results and if it all comes back positive and clear, then I will set you up with a regular OB and we can go from there.'
'Okay.' Elizabeth smiles.
'So, what do you and your husband do for work?' Emily asks as she sets up the ultrasound.
'I'm a detective and my husband is a doctor. Here actually. He's an emergency medicine resident at Chicago Med.' Elizabeth responds. Emily picks up the transducer and puts a slither of the gel on it. Elizabeth lifts her shirt up and she does the ultrasound. After five minutes, Emily puts the transducer down and hands Elizabeth a tissue. Elizabeth wipes the gel off her stomach, puts her shirt back down and sits up.
'So?' Elizabeth asks.
'Congratulations.' Emily smiles and nods. 'Looking at the scan, it would appear that you are 8 weeks pregnant with twins.' Elizabeth smiles slightly. 'Is everything okay?'
'Erm, yeah.' Elizabeth sighs. 'We just never talked about having any more children. We've not long moved from Seattle.'
'If you want, I can refer you to someone to discuss your options.' Emily suggests. There are a few moments of silence.
'I should go.' Elizabeth states as she stands up from the bed. 'Can you text me the results of my blood draw?' Elizabeth asks as she puts her coat on. Emily nods. 'Thanks.' Elizabeth nods back before leaving.
.
Twenty minutes later, Elizabeth is walking into Molly's. She finds Jay and the rest of intelligence.
'Hey.' She sighs as she sits next to Jay.
'Hey.' Jay smiles. 'Everything okay?'
'Yeah.' Elizabeth nods.
'You having a beer?' Jay asks.
'Nah, I'm just going to have a soda.' Elizabeth replies. 'I'm not staying long, Callum's on call tonight.' Jay nods, stands and goes to order the next round of drinks. He returns a few minutes later with the drinks of a tray and hands them out to everyone before sitting back down.
'So, how's Mouse doing?' Adam asks Elizabeth.
'He's doing good.' Elizabeth nods. 'He has a few days leave coming up just after Christmas, he's trying to get more,' she tells him, 'but you know how the rangers can be.' She adds looking at Jay.
'Getting leave can be a nightmare.' Jay nods laughing.
'I don't see them approving more time for him though since he's already had a week.' Elizabeth says with a frown. 'But we talk pretty much everyday.'
