Like most mornings I was woken up by the sound of Hinata and Kageyamas relentless bickering. It only made the hellscape of a world we live in worse. I often questioned if I was even alive or if this was some kind of cruel torture done by the hands of devil himself.
Of course, this is a dramatic way of thinking as the world we live in has been takin over by what you could describe as the undead. It started a couple years ago with a virus, a slow and agonizing one, if you got bitten or scratched, you could catch it. Some people have even gotten it through the transfer of saliva. If you did get infected the symptoms would start off simple with a itchy, tingly sensation. This would soon turn into a burning that would take over your body, your muscles would go stiff, followed then by flu like symptoms such as a headache and nausea. You'd find it near impossible to drink water, your body rejecting it whenever you'd try. That's when things turn for the worse, it no longer becomes a sickness but instead becomes a threat. The victim will began to exhibit erratic behavior. They experience strong spasms, thrash around, and even bite. They will begin to have delusions as their brain gets infected. They completely loose their sense of self and humanity. At this point I would recommend putting them out of their misery. They're a lost cause and will only be of danger to you. Your loved one is no longer in there and if you keep them around it was only result in your tragic and unnecessary death, because after this the victim becomes the predator. They are overwhelmed with hunger, and will do just about anything to satisfy it. They have no sense of grief or guilt. They will eat you with no mercy what so ever.
I've seen this happen a few times in the past year. I saw it happen with Kuroo, who never thought he'd become infected. Being a self proclaimed "man of science" he swore he'd be prepared. But nothing prepares you for the infection. I've lost even more friends to the zombies them selves. Watching them get eaten alive before my eyes. I remember when it happened to Kenma who insisted on staying by Kuroos side no matter what. It happened with my mom and brother and I can only assume most of the people I know have been eaten or infected. However, nothing hurt as much as Yamaguchi. Yamaguchi, who when being faced with a hoard of zombies, looked back at me with tears in his eyes and demanded I run. Of course I didn't want to, I would've died with him If Tanaka and Daichi hadn't pulled me away and dragged me towards safety. We fled as Yamaguchi, who was completely surrounded by zombies, Sacrificed himself for us. Daichi told me he hadn't died in vain and would not be forgotten. He told me we had no other choice, which I felt wasn't true, but I knew Daichi meant the best by saying it. We left to find new shelter that night, I was told it was for our safety, but I get the feeling the others were just trying to get me away from the painful memories of that place. I miss Yamaguchi everyday but in this world, the weak die and Yamaguchi didn't sacrifice himself for me to die. So, like most days, I repress the pain brought by lost loved ones and get up to fight.
I stood up from my matted mattress and put on my glasses, I changed my t shirt which was stained with blood from the night before and joined Hinata and Kageyama in a different area of the cramped hide out. "Could you two be any more obnoxious?" I mumbled, walking past them to grab a rifle from the corner of the room. They stopped fighting and directed their attention to me "Dumbass here ate a share of my food even tho he has plenty of his own" Kageyama complained glaring down at Hinata who responded "Daichi and Suga are out on a food run right now! They'll be back in no time to replace your precious can of beans." I honestly didn't care what they were arguing about and walked towards the door with the rifle in my hand. I turned back towards them before leaving "did Tanaka already go out?" I asked. Hinata shrugged and Kageyamas expression told me he knew just as much. "Idiots" I sighed before leaving, marking sure the door was shut behind me.
I pulled up my rifle making sure nothing was there, it was a quiet morning, I liked those. There weren't any zombies in eyes sight but I circled the building to double check. I felt relief when I saw Tanaka sitting on a stool, a couple feet away from him were the bodies of five, unrecognizable, zombies. "You shouldn't be out here alone" I said. Tanaka stood up a bit startled, then smiled "Well you took too long, Sleeping beauty" he joked. He then looked down at the bodies "I think we need to move bunkers, they're getting a bit to close for comfort." He added. I nodded agreement. Even though no where was free of zombies and they'd always find us through sent, Tanaka was right, five in the span of one morning was more then we wanted.
Tanaka stretched, unarmed "well Daichi and Suga will be back soon and we'll talk it over with-" I cut him off aiming my rifle past his face, he quickly covered his ears as I shot then turned around watching a now extra dead zombie fall to the ground. He starred in shock then laughed out of relief "Damn, that one was so fast and quiet I didn't even see it comin'! Good thing you were here, Tsukishima." He said patting my shoulder firmly. I slightly smiled and stopped as Tanakas expression changed from grateful to terrified. I quickly turned around and aimed my rifle. I expecting to see a hoard of zombies but instead I saw Suga, he was covered in blood and dirt with tear stained cheeks. In one hand he carried a bag of canned food and in the other, the bloody, torn, jacket of Daichi.
