Breath in, breath out.

Silent, aim... I kept my eye on the animal in front of me, it's fur glowed in the sun as it drank from the watering hole. Today was beautiful, the grass had droplets from morning due, the sun warmed my back as I was squatted down. What made today even more beautiful was the animal that stood before me.  As I stepped closer its ears twitched making me stop in my tracks, right when it went back to drinking I went to let go of the arrow before, "y/n!"

At the sound of my name, the deer took off making me turn my head to glare at Zack. "what are you doing?" he asked with his small gun in his hand. "oh I don't know, maybe trying not to starve, " I huffed standing up. "what is it?" I asked.

"Zion wants us to meet him at the house, apparently he and Scarlett got together and had a talk." I could tell by his voice he was filled with curiosity. "okay then let's go." with my words we made our way back to the small cabin. It's been a month since everything went to hell. None of us got close over that period, most of our conversations were just us arguing or small talk to pass time, other than that we all would go out on our own... Well, one thing did change.

My feelings for Zion have just gotten stronger but he's been keeping himself distant from us. We made it to the house within five minutes and walked in to see Scarlett sitting on the bar as Zion stood next to the worn-out sofa. "now that we are all here, can you tell us what's up?" Zack asked softly.

"Scarlett and I have been talking, she has pointed out that we need to change to rules around here, " Zion said looking at Zack then me. "we are running out of food, the river is starting to dry up not to mention this shack is falling apart." he informed us as I locked the front door just to be safe. Ever since the dead has been walking I haven't been able to leave doors unlocked.

"Zack, you and I will be going into town, " Zion said bluntly making me glare at him. "are you insane?" I snapped making all three of them look at me. " you're not sending him out there on a death mission, " I said making Scarlett roll her eyes at my statement.
"but it's okay for us to send Zion on his own so you two could freeload? the sad thing is that it's actually starting to show on you, you know what they say, the more fat that's on the bones the more filling it is, I think you should lose a few pounds," she giggled.

"thats not funny, " Zack said.

"no she's right, " I said making her smile fade into anger. "but you know something, at least im not a bitch, " I snapped before looking at Zion. "let me go, I can shoot, " I begged knowing Zack wouldn't be able to survive out there. "Don't be stupid! You'll fall over air and get killed," Zack said trying to stop me.

Zion ignored him stepping closer to me. "Very well, we leave at sunrise tomorrow." He looked over at Zack making Zack glare at me. "You are on night watch, come on," he said to me as he walked to the bedroom leaving the other two behind.

When we made it to the bedroom I shut the door as he put some food, a bottle of water, a dagger and a gun in a duffel bag leaving plenty of room for things that we may find while we are out running. "Why did you decide to go instead of him?" Zion asked making me look up at him as his yellow like eyes looked straight threw me.  "He's my friend... I know he won't be able to survive out there," I mumbled looking down, not able to look him in the eyes.
"And you think you can?" His words were like ice, I looked up to see his cold eyes on me. "Better me than him." When I said that he stood up throwing the bag in the corner pushing past me and opening the door. "Get some sleep, we have a long day tomorrow," his words were soft this time.

I followed him out as Scarlett came in to claim the bed. I got on the Sofa and laid there as Zion got on the bar and Zack played with his knife. I don't know how or when but at some point I fell asleep.

"Y/n, y/n..."

"Yes mommy?"

"They said he will be lucky to live..." her voice was soft, filled with sadness and worry as it got hard to breath. My baby brother was diagnosed with cancer, he would be lucky to see the age of four.

Sadly that extra year with him wasn't gifted to us, it took only a few months to kill him. As I sat in the rain a tear ran down my cheek. A little girl only the age of six losing her only brother, her not understanding why, why must life be so cruel, why must she sit by and watch the ones she loves die, being weak and not able to do anything.
I sniffle as the cold rain ran down my back as footsteps come and go. "Hey," a voice said making me look up to see a boy, he looked a year or two older than me, his beautiful gold eyes, his red soaked hair. His look was soft as he held his umbrella over  me so the rain wouldn't hit me. "Are you okay? Why are you crying?"

I whipped my tears nodding. "I just don't understand, my brother got took from me..." I mumbled as he sat next to me. "Is this funeral for your brother?" I simply nodded at his question. "Well, someone once told me that sometimes things are given then taken to make us stronger," he said looking up at the sky.

"What if I'm not able to?" I asked sniffling as he looked at me. "It'll take time, it's okay to sit around for a bit, be depressed, and greave but don't be there to long because the world won't stop for you so you shouldn't stop for the world?"
