The sun is rising, painting the sky a golden color. Everything is quiet momentarily until Evan bursts out of the temple. Nea is on his back, holding to his shoulders as he runs for dear life. He barely hangs on to his flashlight as he runs as fast as he can.
"What am I doing? What am I doing? What am I doing?!" Evan repeats over and over. The soldiers can now see Evan from further within the temple as he runs out.
"HEY, YOU! STOP THIS INSTANT!" a soldier shouts from the doorway. Evan scatters into the bushes from where he came from, leading him back into the forest. He does his best to avoid hurting Nea against branches, but this hinders him further.
"I said I wanted to find something historical... THIS IS NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING! WHY AM I DOING THIS!?" Evan berates himself as he keeps pace with the soldiers.
"YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DEALING WITH, KID! STOP RUNNING!" The leading soldier in the group yelled.
"I... I can't go back to camp now. I need to stay clear of the dig site too. I don't know what I'm getting myself into." Evan's escape routes begin to dwindle. Evan spins around and starts turning left to follow a new path.
"Perhaps my old tracks will mislead them-" A few seconds later Evan and Nea suddenly fall down an unexpectedly steep drop. To cushion his fall, Evan has to slide down, buttfirst.
"WOAH!" They start sliding for a bit until Evan regains his footing near the bottom of the steep hill incline. However, when he regains his footing, he has to stop on a tree to avoid toppling further down the slope. He starts hyperventilating.
"My god... I really... should exercise more..." Evan pants. Nea rolls her eyes. She taps Evan's shoulder as if to tell him to suck it up and get moving again. The soldiers sound a bit closer after he stops.
"DOWN THERE!" shouts one of the soldiers.
"Damn, it didn't work!" he says to himself. Evan lets out one big exhale, pushes himself off the tree, and tries to keep running more. He tries to pump himself up to encourage himself to run more.
"Uhh... come on, come on," Evan says under his breath. Slowly but surely, he picks back up his running pace again and starts running deeper and deeper into the jungle. Around him is a biodiverse ecosystem of plants and animals. Normally, he would come to closely examine such a place. Unfortunately, the soldiers are still on his heels. They have no trouble with the slope and continue their pace. Nea turns her head and looks back at them.
"Ngh!" Nea sticks out her tongue. Evan groans internally, knowing that whatever force is chasing him is already unhappy. Evan approaches what looks to be a dirt road. He sprints across, crossing from one tree line to the other. In the distance, a few military jeeps can be seen driving towards him. Ryan is riding shotgun, looking around until he spots Evan.
"THERE! STOP THE CAR!" Ordered Ryan. The Jeep's tires squeal as the car comes to a complete halt. Ryan jumps out and rendezvouses with other soldiers. Luckily, Evan is already long gone.
"I'm... running from the military? I AM RUNNING FROM THE ENTIRE MILITARY!?" Evan blurted out in panic. Evan's thought process has become pure panic. "THIS CAN'T GET ANY WORSE!"
Suddenly, a gigantic spider lands on Evan's nose from the tree above. It takes a second for him to realize what it is.
"AHHH!" Evan screams. Thankfully, Nea leans over Evan's shoulder and pats it off of his face. The duo comes across some rocky terrain that inclines upwards to look like a small cliff. Evan sees the cliff, dejected. He pants, "I don't know... How much longer I can last!"
Evan starts climbing his way up. Each meter becomes more and more arduous as his arms and legs struggle. The adrenaline is leaving his body. Evan's body gives near the top of the climb.
