Moments after Evan & Nea are falling from the cliff...
A lush forest fills a basin, teeming with life, but peaceful. Sunshine gently glows on the forest floor as animals scamper across. Bushes rustle, birds chirp, and the wind swings vines back and forth. Then, the sound of two people screaming slowly increases in volume over time. Evan and Nea abruptly crash through the top of the tree line. Nea desperately grasps Evan's backpack as they fall, bracing for impact.
Their fall is slowed by the thick layer of leaves and thin branches, but not enough. Evan closes his eyes.
Nea pulls herself up, seemingly gliding with Evan's backpack. She manages to reach his neck and activates her power just in time. Using Evan as a conduit, she wraps energetic whips around a sturdy tree branch. They suddenly stop, centimeters above the ground.
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHH....!" Evan screams. His voice slowly dies away. Finally, he looks down at the ground. "Oh...".
Nea lets out a sigh of relief. She lets go of Evan's neck to disconnect her powers from him and also jumps down to the ground. The energetic whips then dissolve into thin air and disappear. Evan falls and lands hard on his bottom.
"Oof." Evan takes a while to recover and scratches his head to get the leaves out of his hair. He also looks up at where he came from and sees the top of the trees shaking wildly.
"I... I can't believe we're alive!" Evan says in disbelief. His heart is pounding from the increased adrenaline. Nea is standing still in one spot, clearly fatigued. She looks up to Evan as he recovers and stands up. Evan remembers that they can't stick around for too long because of the military just above them. After the very conspicuous yell, he decides to keep his voice down a little bit, because the military heard that.
"I have so much to ask and think about... But... We need to get away from here before that. Come on let's get going!"
Evan reaches down to Nea and she looks up at him. He reaches out his hand and she grabs it, and he hoists her on his back.
Evan looks around, but Nea has already gone silent. She beams at him and gestures forward. She reaches for his neck...and in a flash, they disappear into the forest's overgrowth.
Later that afternoon in the forest.
Evan and Nea slow their pace and come to rest under a large tree. Its bark is rugged and the leaves are a vibrant green. Both of them are completely exhausted. Nea has spent most of her power and now gives Evan a tired smile. With the power waning, Evan's legs begin to feel the full effect of his speed. He falls as his legs give.
"Okay... Okay, that's enough... We've got to stop," Evan pants. He drags himself to sit slowly on a nearby log and exhales hard upon sitting down to rest his legs. Nea climbs down Evan's arm as he goes to sit down and looks up at his tired face. Evan leans backward, burying his face into his hands, and groans. He slowly drags his hands down his face with a look of pure frustration.
"Nngh!! WHAT WAS I THINKING?! RUNNING AWAY WITH SOME... ALIEN? OR... GLOWING, POWERFUL GHOST ENTITY... THING?! NOW I HAVE THE ENTIRE MILITARY CHASING ME!" Evan explodes in a fit of rage. Nea looks at him and attempts to calm him down. Evan, unable to understand her, gives into a panic even more than before.
"AHHH! I DON'T UNDERSTAND! DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT I AM SAYING RIGHT NOW?!" Nea blinks obliviously with the same puppy dog eyes as before, seeing Evan rant with a curious stare. He gets up, nearly tripping as he adjusts to his wobbly legs.
"MY LIFE IS OVER! I MEAN THEY CLEARLY GOT A GOOD LOOK AT MY FACE! THEY PROBABLY KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT ME NOW! W-WHAT IF..." Evan lets out a huge gasp and pauses on the spot for a moment.
"What if... my mum... finds out...! OH MY GOD MY MUM IS SO GOING TO FIND OUT ABOUT THIS! GAAAH HA HAAA! I CAN'T TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"
Evan is now leaning over towards Nea and is somewhat in her face ranting out to get it off of his chest. "I DON'T EVEN HAVE MY PHONE CHARGER ANYMORE! WHAT HAPPENS IF SHE CONSTANTLY RINGS ME WHEN I CAN'T EVEN ANSWER HER FOR WEEKS!? SHE'S GOING TO GO CRAZY! I'M FREAKING OUT! I'M FREAKING OUT!! I'M...!"
Evan is cut off as Nea out of the blue, holds onto Evan's nose with her hand unexpectedly.
Evan's eyes widen as he looks directly at Nea as if wondering what's happening. Nea looks up at Evan and slowly lets out a really cute smile that could melt a million hearts.
It will all be okay.
Evan can't help but feel a lot calmer and slightly warm inside. Nea eventually lets go and returns to her sitting position. Evan stands up straight again and closes his eyes to deeply inhale and exhale to calm himself even more. After a few breaths, he opens his eyes.
"Alright, alright...First, we're going to need to think of some sort of system here at least for communicating. Maybe we could start with our names." Evan attempts to address Nea, knowing that he is alone in this understanding. Evan points to himself and speaks slowly.
"Evan..." he pauses. He repeats the gesture once more. He then points to Nea. She takes a second to get the idea but she manages to understand and she slowly says her name.
"Nea...!". Evan breathes a sigh of relief. Surprised that the plan worked, he relaxes.
"Nea, huh?" Evan repeats to himself. Nea lets out a little nod in response to hearing her name.
"And... All that power stuff that happened. Like those whips and even the speed, you gave me... You channeled that through me somehow. What is that power called?" Evan's words do not reach Nea, and she tilts her head in confusion. Evan remembers, and instead tries to recreate what happens. He swings his arms wildly as he imagines himself destroying the military vehicles. He tries to motion things being pulled from his back.
"Whhsssh! FHHHHH! BOOM POW POW POW! FHHHHH! Splat!" Evan adds sound effects to his depiction of the scene. Nea stares at Evan, then giggles. Evan breathes out a sigh of frustration.
"I suppose she is a young kid, after all..." Evan smiles.
Evan strangely gazes at the amulet around Nea's neck for a brief second and is about to ask about it when he hears some trees rustling in the background. He freezes and turns around to the source of the sound.
"Okay, maybe we should keep moving. No more running though. Let's just... walk." Evan whispers.
Evan starts to walk off into the forest more and looks back at Nea and beckons her along. Nea quickly catches up to Evan and walks alongside him. Nea briefly has a look at her amulet and notices that they need to go in a slightly different direction. She tugs on Evans's trouser leg and points them in the right direction.
"This way? Wait. Where are we going?" Evan gives her a confused look. He takes another look at the amulet and guesses that it is very powerful and that it's taking her on a certain route. Torn for a few seconds, he decides to trust the amulet. "I hope you know what you're doing."
They walk on a little more. Nea looks up at Evan as they walk in the supposed correct direction now.
"Ev...an..." Nea whispers to herself.
They walk off into the distance together side by side.
