They're on their way back from their mission in Sand when he realizes how literally in sync they are.
They're approaching the tree line, Guy and Naruto taking turns carrying the tiny slip of a man they had wasted all their energy on acquiring back to Leaf. Lee, Kiba, Neji, and Tenten are in front, while Kakashi and Sakura trail behind.
The sun is just beginning to set, and with time, their shadows stretch in front of them and they gradually become dark giants against the pale sand. He's very engrossed in his book for the first half of the trip, so Sakura quickly gives up on their one-sided conversation, instead making general quips every now and then about their mission and the surrounding area while he 'hmms' and nods.
Their paces differ throughout their walk, with Sakura momentarily falling behind, then catching up, then him falling behind and catching up. Hers was to blame for the sunset, his for a particularly nasty section of his book (something she would no doubt berate him for should she see it). Finally, he puts his book away and walks until he is beside the young Haruno.
"Isn't it pretty?" she sighs, shielding her eyes as she looks behind them.
He turns to face the sunset, observing what little he can with one eye.
It is beautiful.
He can't deny that.
They simultaneously turn to face ahead and stare after the others, when something catches Kakashi's eye. He looks down at their stretched shadows, noticing that they're walking in tandem. Perfect harmony with one another.
The setting sun splays their figures out in front of them, making this fact even more apparent, and he wonders if Sakura notices it too. She must not, or she would have commented on it.
He continues walking beside her and keeps this discovery to himself. After their little battle of wits (and perversion) yesterday, he would really rather not give her another thing to tease him about.
