When Boruto appeared on earth, Konohamaru, Shikamaru and the technological team were there, waiting for days, trying to figure out a way to help them. But the only one who could open portals was still in a coma.
Still crying, Boruto showed up and told them that Naruto was unconscious and needed urgent attention. Also, that Kimochi would follow them shortly and they needed to have the prototype on.
Shikamaru, obedient to Boruto's words, put the prototype on Boruto's head and ordered the techs that the same thing be done in Naruto. After seeing himself safe, he couldn't hold it any longer:
—My mom stayed there. My mom stayed there. We need to save her. She told me she would wait. We need to go back there. But I don't know how to get there. We need to save her.
Shikamaru, understanding the context and possible outcome, walked towards Boruto and hugged him, while Boruto kept crying. Everybody else, aware of the meaning of Boruto's words, stood quietly and wept. Konohamaru was in total disbelief and shock, and couldn't even shed a tear...
Shikamaru told Boruto:
—I understand what your feeling, Boruto. But right now, we need to move elsewhere or your mom's efforts will be for nothing; we also need to take your father to the village to be taken care of since he is severely injured. I'll take you, don't resist.
Shikamaru carried Boruto and placed him on his back... Boruto didn't put any resistance; overwhelmed by all the feelings, he also passed out.
