Never to Know

I've watched your movements-
The way you take a breath
The way you tap your desk
The way you plot your steps.

And I know I'll never see
What rages behind your face
Though I may feel a blade pierce
My heart as I feel your place.

I will never be inside your mind.
You'll never know mine and what's behind.
These fences are thicker than cedar.
And their foundations, even deeper.

All that I can give of myself
Is my support, with thoughts on shelf
But they are so dark in themselves,
So I will hide them all quite well.

I'm my soul's a suffocating pain,
And it's drenched from years of tears and rain.
But a lot of what those jars contain?
The crying of my heart at your strain.

I wish I could tell you of that.
But there will never be a day.
So though I myself may fall flat,
I'll always hold you on your way.
