Bleeding Hearts

Why did it have to be you
That made me realize
One chunk of metal can steal it all
In one broken moment?

The last pull of you finger
Shattered us irreparably.
The remaining shards cut my mind daily
Drawing blood every time.

Each cut gushes blurred pictures:
Wading barefoot in Emerald  Creek
Hands brushing as we walked close
Chilled late night star gazing.

Just days ago these pieces
Weren't mere broken fragments.
They were our growing story
Bursting into color.

You've ripped out the pages
Of that new book
And left them to flutter aimlessly
In my mind alone.

Don't you get it?
If two hearts fuse
And one fills itself with lead
The other bleeds too.

Did you find relief?
Is the hurt gone?
Is numbness really
Better than some pain?

You're wrong.
So wrong.
I thought I was enough for you.
Guess I was wrong, too.
