chapter 3

*Alex’s POV*

after a few minutes of fake sleeping I sit up and smile, patting the spot beside me

“Come sit.” He looks at me in surprise. A small blush spreads over his face and he scratches the back of his head, avoiding eye contact. I study his face then laugh lightly.

“You were awake? The whole time?” he asks softly, obviously kind of embarrassed. I nod slightly.

“Ya, and you’ve gone soft over the years, ‘aven't you?” I ask teasingly. His eye twitches once as he processes it. He stamps his foot, clenched fists snapping to his side.

“I ‘ave not gone soft!” He snaps in defense. I laugh lightly, finding his reaction funny.

“You to’ally ‘ave,” I continue to tease. He grows frustrated, taking a step forward to try and intimidate me.

“I ‘ave not!” he yells. I get up and poke his cheek

“you ‘ave too,” I repeat nonchalantly. He gets a small irk mark

“I ‘ave not!” I start laughing and he glares at me

“you ‘ave too, and you are to’ally a loser for no’ admi’ing i’,” I say with a smirk. He grumbles to himself, crossing his arms. I lay back down on my bed, staring up at the ceiling. There’s a dip in the side of the bed to signal that Bardroy is sitting next to me. He looks down in thought and the mood turns grim. Thoughts of our time serving plague our minds.

“They didn’ deserve tha’,” Bardroy says softly.

“No...they didn’t,” I sigh. The war was the most unforgiving thing we experienced. At the time everyone thought I was a boy, so I was really outcasted for my odd behaviour. Bardroy and I, we tried to tell them what would happen. Of course, the general didn’t listen. He left with his final orders that night and we were doomed. Everyone but Bardroy and myself were killed in battle, including my brother. Memories run through my head of my fellow soldiers falling by my feet.

“Oi, Alex, calm down. It’s okay,” says Bardroy, snapping me out of my thoughts. He reaches down and wipes away tears. I didn’t realize I had started crying. I sniffle lightly then sit up and hug him, taking him by surprise. He doesn’t say anything though, just gently wraps his arms around me. I feel him stroke my hair once and I then smile.

“Thank you Bardroy,” I whisper. He nods in response, holding me close. I let him, and then I realize just how close we are. I can feel a blush colour my cheeks.
