Rain droplets running against your window as they fell loudly on the cars parked below your house. The streets dark with a mild fog filling the airspace outside.
The screen beaming before your eyes as you scrolled down through the vivid information on the last case. A picture of the crime scene took over the screen.
A corpse of a uniformed male who was laid on his back against the concrete, his clothes drenched along with a wet face with his deep wrinkles filled with droplets. The crimson tint on his shirt darkened as it spread across the thick material. The flashlight reflecting on his face. His forehead bloody with the mark of the killer while his eyes stared into oblivion.
A sigh left your lips as you realized that this was his seventh murder.
You had noticed that your father was more annoyed than his usual man period since he would often pace back and forth in the kitchen the moment he stepped into the house. Pulling his hair out of frustration as your mother cooked dinner. You guessed it was because of the case since you had never seen him so worked up over anything. It somehow managed to stress you up.
You moved your right hand to the mouse as your left massaged your temple.
It was four in the morning and you had school in a few hours, sleep still lacked. But you didn't bother much since you knew you could find time to sleep during class. As you scrolled down another picture was showed up. It was the top view of the body. You knew something was different about the murder but that was it. That was all you knew and hoped.
You brought your head closer to the screen in an attempt to get a better view. The man was bald with a stout body, you realized that he was put in the chalk outline of the previous murder rather than being dumped at the corner of the alley. As your eyes examined the body, you saw that his ring finger was as good as yours.
Your eyes narrowed at your discovery.
You bent down to pick up the case files.
As you picked one up, a pen drive fell out of it. It was tiny red plastic hardware with a black back, it had a small strap along with 'San Disk' written in black, profoundly placed at its red center. You were surprised to find one in the files as these were usually left back at the precinct with the rest of the evidence.
You soon found yourself plugging it into the side of your laptop. You moved your cursor to click on the new icon. You then clicked the first recording which said ' 31ST OCT 3 AM-4 AM', you were surprised to see that this was the only video or attachment on this drive. You clicked on it and waited for it to start playing.
It soon did, as you could see the man from the picture walking around the entrance of the alley. It was the clip of the night of the murder. You still had your head in front of the screen as you tried to catch every movement in the video. The man was now returning back to his post after patrolling for a little while.
You saw a figure step into the frame while the officer stood in front of the opening for a second. You watched as the figure took his place against the wall waiting for the man to notice him. You saw the flashlight now on the hooded figure who had his eyes and nose covered by the hood while his lips were out to display a smirk that took over his face. You shuddered as you saw the figure pull out a pocket knife and play with it.
As you sat there watching the recording of a man getting murdered corrupting your mind in the process. The alarm on your phone went off. The alarm rang across the room while you swung your arm to stop it from ringing. It was a reminder for you to tidy up the place and get to bed before your mother walks in at any moment now.
Shit.
You removed the USB in an instant while your other hand wrapped around the mouse moving it to switch off your PC. You hid the files under the bed while the bedsheet covered it completely. You ran past the room and slid under the duvet as you heard footsteps approaching.
You heard the knob rotate when you saw your table light still switched on. You cussed under your breath.
The door was now open with your mother at the foot of your bed. You heard her snicker while your eyes were shut and you continued to pretend sleep, snoring softly.
"Aish this girl didn't even switch off her lamp" she spoke in her hoarse voice
You hear the floor under your bed creak as your mother made her way towards your study table to shut the light off.
"Y/Nah wake up or else you will be late for school" she whispered against your ear as you felt a light peck against your forehead.
You shuffled on the bed ready to throw your pretend tantrum.
A chuckle filled the room as you heard your mom walk away giving you some extra time to sleep.
The air that you held in, finally released.
