I'm surprised that I got this chapter out quicker than I thought. Again, I'm not entirely sure of this chapter, I feel like I didn't do great. But if you guys like it, that makes me happy.
Please enjoy the chapter.
Once again, the setting almost felt like charging towards a boss battle in a video game. Lightning flashed in the sky, making the pagoda look bigger and darker. It made the guards look more intimidating too. Kaito could feel his body tensing up even more. He didn't feel afraid, just this determination to see Maki. Now that he had some help, hopefully this will go well. As he started running across the bridge, Mondo sped ahead of Kaito, hefting his weapon effortlessly. The guards didn't have a chance to fight back as he swung the stop sign. They were both knocked to the side harshly. They crashed to the ground. Kaito wasn't sure if they were dead or unconscious, but he didn't care. He tackled into the heavy wooden doors, causing them to burst open. Three vampires were at the entrance hall. It wasn't much but Kaito can't take many chances. He'll have to try to push past and only fight if he had to. His coat flew behind him like a cape as he rushed past the first two. The third one however pushed him before he could get past. The push, combined with the momentum Kaito had in his sprint, caused him to stumble a little. It forced him to stop running, catching him almost completely off guard. He faced the three, all of them approaching him. He hoped that he didn't have to fight, and thankfully Mondo had him covered. He swung the stop sign like a hammer at the vampire closet to the door.
It got the attention of the other two, giving Kaito the cover that he needed. He only had to deal with one that was halfway going down the stairs. The guard obviously had heard the commotion. Kaito unceremoniously shoved the vampire down the stairs. He ignored the vampire's grunts in pain, continuing his assent up the stairs. He could see a guard at the top of the stairs. Like the one before him, he must have heard what was going on downstairs. Once Kaito got to him, his tackled his midriff, causing him to go barrelling over Kaito and fall down the stairs. A shout immediately brought his attention to the two vampires with him. Once again, Mondo suddenly comes out of nowhere, charging at one of the vampires. It gave Kaito another opening to keep going. He would've continued until he heard something behind him. It sounded like a chair or something like that being smashed onto somebody.
"Owada?!" Kaito exclaimed, turning around. Sure enough, the remains of a chair were scattered around Mondo as he held one of the vampires back. The other had taken the opportunity to try to get him from behind.
"Kaito! Keep going!" Mondo shouted, not relenting in his stance.
"Hey, Pompadour Freak!"
Mondo didn't keep his guard up when a fist came flying at him. He didn't have any time to block nor brace himself for the impact. The fist collided with his nose, emitting a loud crunch. As Mondo stumbled back in shock, the vampire that he has been holding back launched his fist into Mondo's right cheek. This caused him to jerk to the side. He braved himself on the wall, trying to get his to register what had happened, as blood poured out his nose. 'Okay. Might have gotten too cocky there.' Mondo thought as he tried to catch his breath as quick as he could. He heard knuckles being cracked as the first vampire started to approach him. He was getting ready to strike Mondo again. Mondo had braced himself, but the fist never collided with his face. Kaito had stood between them, grabbing the vampire's fist. He pushed the assailant back as much as he could. As much as he wanted to get to Maki as fast as possible, he thought that he could spare a quick minute to stand up with his new ally. After all, if Mondo got taken out, there wouldn't be much for the guards to try to stop him from saving Maki.
"Back off, bastard!" The vampire snarled. He used all his strength and threw Kaito across the room as if he were a rag doll. Kaito smacked into the wall. As soon as he hit it, he slumped to the ground stunned. There was a brief ringing in his ears. Kaito shook his head a little to try to get himself together.
"You're just a kid." The vampire growled, calmly stalking up to Kaito. Kaito didn't have any chance to react as he felt a large hand wrap around his neck. He was brought to his feet. "I'll crush your neck with the same hands that took that virgin!" The vampire would've continued, but he looked perplexed as Kaito suddenly looked relaxed. Kaito took a silent sniff. If this guy also kidnapped Maki, maybe he touched her recently. Kaito's hunch was right. It hasn't been too long. The scent is still fresh. Maki was still alive. She's still fighting. 'Maki. Just hang on a little longer. I'm gonna save you.' Kaito thought, keeping Maki's face in his mind.
"Hey! What are you getting so high on?!"
Kaito moved so fast that he didn't register head butting the vampire, until he saw his nose bleeding rapidly. Kaito's body felt stronger, his heart was beating faster and his mind had sharpened, all because he could feel Maki being close by. He had this one desire. One that was simple, but selfish in a way. This drive that he had was far stronger than his vampire instincts. Something that told him that he was going to see Maki again.
"Hey, kid!"
Kaito snapped out his thoughts immediately. The second vampire was unconscious where as Mondo had the first in a headlock. His nose had healed up and the mark on his face had faded. The vampire tried to bite his arm but with the way Mondo held him, he wasn't being given a chance.
"I'll handle these pups! You get to the top dog!" Mondo continued, tightening his hold and gestures at the stairs. Kaito hesitated, wondering if he should help for a brief second. But then he remembered that he had planned to save his energy until he needed to fight on his own.
"Thank you." Kaito said before charging up the stairs.
"Don't die! Got it?!" Mondo yelled after him. Kaito didn't reply back. His legs moved so hard and fast that he thought that he was literally flying up the stairs. He was fuelled by that desire at this point. He ignored everything around him. He only focused on the stairs. He wasn't sure if he ran past any other vampires, but he didn't care. Maki was the only thing that mattered.
