Annabeth's POV:
The week after finding out I'm pregnant, I have a doctor's appointment to do the first ultrasound, and find out when the baby is due. Percy comes with me, to see the ultrasound. I swear he's more excited about all of this than I ever thought possible.
As we walk through the hall to the exam room, Percy's hand slips into mine and he gives it a squeeze. I look at him to see him grinning at me again. This brings a small smile to my face. Seeing Percy so excited about this is making me slowly begin to believe that it may really be a good thing.
We walk into the exam room and sit to wait for the doctor. Percy is all but bouncing from excitement, making me laugh and say "Seaweed Brain, calm down."
"I can't, Wise Girl," he tells me. "I'm too happy."
When the doctor comes in a moment later, she sees the smiles on our faces and a warm smile grows on her own. "Hello, Ms. Chase, I'm Doctor Elise Stout," she says to me. "You're here for your first prenatal appointment, correct?"
I confirm this, and she indicates Percy, whose hand is still intertwined with mine. "This must be your..." She trails off, waiting for my response.
"Fiancé," I supply.
Doctor Stout nods and says "Alright," as she crosses the room to a computer and pulls something up on it.
She begins asking me some questions and typing information into the computer as I answer. Finally, after she asks what seems like a thousand questions, she tells us "Now we have all those questions out of the way, it's time for the fun part. Are you ready to see your baby for the first time?"
"Yes," Percy and I both say, and Percy's excitement immediately becomes even more obvious. I lay back on the exam table and pull up my shirt to uncover my stomach. The doctor squirts some cold gel onto my stomach, and puts the ultrasound wand on top of it. She moves it around a bit, presses some buttons on the computer, and after a moment, we hear a soft, repeating "whoosh" sound.
"That's your baby's heartbeat," Dr. Stout explains. I glance at Percy to see that he's staring at me in amazement. "It is a bit fainter than we normally would like," the doctor continues, and Percy's brow furrows. I find myself frowning as well, but she goes on reassuringly, "That's nothing to worry about right now, though. We'll check it again at your next appointment. More than likely, it will become much stronger in the next few weeks."
Then, she turns the screen toward us. At first, it doesn't look like there's anything on it, but the doctor points to a small shape that could really only be described as a blob. "That's your baby," she tells us. "It doesn't look like much yet, but in a few months, the arms, legs, and even the baby's face will be clearly visible."
In that moment, looking at the image on the screen of my unborn child, I decide that this is meant to be. Even though this baby isn't coming at the best time, this is a good thing.
I hear the doctor pushing some more buttons on the computer, and a minute later, she puts some small sheets of thick, glossy paper into my hands. I look at them and see that each one has a snapshot from the ultrasound.
"Your next appointment should be in about a month," she tells me. "And your due date is at the end of March."
After that, Dr. Stout gives me a paper towel to wipe the gel off of my stomach. Then, it's time for Percy and I to leave.
Once we return home, I decide to tape one of the snapshots to our fridge. I'm not sure what we'll do with the others, but this one fits nicely amongst all of the other things on the fridge. I carefully place it so it's surrounded by pictures of our family and friends. It seems to stand out and blend in all at once.
Percy comes up behind me, wraps his arms around my waist, and kisses the top of my head. "It's perfect, Wise Girl," he whispers.
Hey, what's up? This chapter is a little short, but there may be something fun/important happening in the next chapter. 😃
I'm pretty sure (not entirely, but fairly sure, at least), someone else has finally started reading this book. It is possible that those reads are still just me, though....
If there really is someone reading this, I need name ideas. Well, I've found some names I like, but if you're convincing enough, I just might use your idea instead. So, what should Percabeth's children be named?
Anyway, thanks for reading, if anyone actually has, lol. Let me know what you think.
