Alice had a day off. No White House. No stress.

No President Kennedy...

She didn't know what to do with herself all morning. She was already accustomed to her routine. Alice longed for something to distract her. Her prayers were answered by a phone call from Frances. She apparently had a free day as well. They were to meet up at the diner with some of their other friends; Jane, Sally, and Mandy. All of them together in high school used to call themselves the Hairspray Sisters, and they always tried to rile up the greasers.

Seeing as she could dress in any way she wanted, she opted for a casual, pink dress, complemented, obviously, by her famous bubble flip.

She went outside saying goodbye to everyone, doubling the corner of her street, and soon finding Monty's Diner. April had brought a nice feeling. If the sun was out, the temperature was more than acceptable. Alice joyfully went up the steps inside the building. The smell of pie, coffee, and bread soon found its way up her nose, immediately making her hungry.

"Oh, there she is!" Sally said out loud, pointing at Alice from a booth with red seats.

"Hello, Madam President!" Jane joked, saluting with her hand to her forehead. Mandy hummed Hail to the Chief while Alice sat down, giggling at their silliness.

"I'm only an errand girl." She said as humbly as she could.

"Even so, the errand girl to the most powerful man in the world." Sally said with an exaggerated voice, as the waitress brought their food. Alice always ate the same at Monty's diner, so they had ordered prior to her arrival.

"You've got to get us into a White House event or something!" Mandy exclaimed all of a sudden.

"Pretty please!" They all looked at Alice trying to make puppy faces.

"Ok, calm down. I'll try to get you in as soon as I am able to. I can't promise anything." She had no idea if something like that could even be possible.

"How about this? You get us in and in return, we get you a date. Deal?" Asked Mandy while she twirled her dark hair around.

"Uh, no. I don't want a date." Alice shook her head quickly.

"Oh, yes you do, with Dean." Francy spoke this time, with a suggestive tone.

"Dean who?"

"Martin." Mandy said ironically. "Dean Silverman, remember?"

"Ah. Isn't he like twelve?" Alice's face made a grimace. She only remembered him from the last time she'd seen him, nine years ago.

"He's two years older than us... Listen, I know you're into old men..." She shivered. Mandy had never been able to understand Alice's taste in men. "But you should give Dean a try. He's already got his own business."

Still unimpressed, Alice rolled her eyes. She was dreading this, and she had never gone on a date before, but she knew her friends wouldn't leave her alone until she agreed. All of them already had boyfriends, so they had been eager for Alice to find someone as well.

"I very much doubt I'll enjoy it, but if I accept will you let me be? It looks like you've all been planning this behind my back for a while now." She said with a defeated sigh.

They all clasped their hands together excitedly and with a hopeful gleam in their eyes.

"I will let him know!"

Alice was grateful for still having some friends who cared about her even if they didn't stay in touch a lot. And even though she knew nothing would come out of the date, it would give her something to do on her next day off. Perhaps she would even enjoy it. But in the meantime, other things were troubling her mind.
