Gabrielle had pulled up a chair and was sitting next to Jack's bed. Jack was bouncing between lightly sleeping and barely awake. Gabrielle was just watching him while holding his hand. Every time he would wake back up he would squeeze her hand a little. It comforted Gabrielle to feel those touches. It meant he was still alive. They stayed this way until until a nurse came by a little while later.
"Well Mr Brinkmen, it's time for us to move you to a room. So now we have to get you ready to go."
"Nurse, his parents aren't back yet. They went to get some coffee. Can you send someone to tell them?"
"Sorry we don't have anyone we could send. If they don't come back before he is moved we will tell them when they return."
Gabrielle stood up and moved the chair back out of the way. It only took the them a minute or two to disconnect the boxes from the wall and they were either placed on the bed pole or placed on the bed next Jack. Just like that Jack was ready to move.
...
Gabrielle was following the tech has he was pushing the bed down the hall just thinking about life. That was when Jack broke her out of her thoughts
"Gabrielle, can you go find them and let them know I was moved? I don't want them to worry."
"Jack, are you sure you want me leave you now? You don't want someone to stay with you?"
"Gabrielle I never want you to leave me again. But I will survive for a little while so that they don't worry. I am sure it will take some time to get me situated in the room. I know you'll come back."
"OK Jack, I will go find them, if that's what you want."
"Thank you Gabrielle. I will see you soon. Love you"
"I love you too Jack."
Gabrielle turned to the tech.
"Umm, where would they end up going to get coffee?"
"The cafeteria most likely. It's open twenty four hours now for at least drinks and snacks."
"Thank you. I'll be back Jack."
So Gabrielle turned down the next hall following the signs to the cafeteria. It took her a couple of minutes to find it. She was beginning to wonder what was going to happen when she found them. It's the first time they will be out of Jack's sight since he woke up so who knows what will happen. She just hoped it wouldn't be world war three.
When she walked in the cafeteria she saw them sitting at a table by the wall. Gabrielle approached them to deliver the news.
"Ummm, I just wanted to let you know that Jack is being moved to his room in CCU. They are transporting him now. It will probably be a few minutes before they have him setup to receive visitors. Jack didn't want you worried if you returned to Post OP and he wasn't there."
With that Gabrielle turned to head back when she was stopped by Jack's Mom.
"Thank you for letting us know Gabrielle. Would you please sit down for a few minutes. I believe there are some things that need to be discussed."
"I told Jack I would come..."
"Please Gabrielle. This discussion needs to happen and It can't be in front of Jack right now."
Gabrielle looked torn for a minute before she slumped and pulled up a chair. Anyone looking at them could see there was separation between the group and the girl that just joined them. It was like a family and an outsider sitting down for a discussion that neither side wanted.
