Making sure your colours work well together is super important. It doesn't matter how well you've edited the picture, how nice the text is, it simply won't look good unless you've got the colour scheme right. I get that sometimes it's hard - I too struggle with colour schemes sometimes, especially light ones. But you just have to learn it, and often you'll realise when the colours are off.
Colour can say a lot about your design. It's not just about making them work well together, it's about making sure it reflects the genre and themes you're trying to represent. For example, you wouldn't do a pink and white colour scheme for a horror cover, and honestly, that's just common sense.
First thing to do is to learn the colour wheel. You'll have seen it many times before and it comes in super handy when thinking about colours and which to use together.

So for example, I might use blue and orange on a cover because they are complementary colours and therefore should, if used correctly, look good together.
It's relatively simple to understand, but it's applying it to your graphics that can get tricky.
You need to spread out your colours. If I decide to use green and blue as the colours of my cover, I need to make sure that they're well balanced. Don't just put lots of green things at the top and all the blue at the bottom. Mix it up so there's green at both the top and bottom, and the same for the blue. Basically, don't put one colour all in one place, because the cover will feel unbalanced.
And as for colour reflecting genre, well, you're probably already doing it. As I said, this is common sense. Don't give a happy story a dark cover. Don't give a horror story a light cover. It's as simple as that.

Don't stress about colour schemes. Often you'll instinctively know when the colours aren't right.
