This can be really important to stop your models looking flat and make your covers 'pop' a bit more. And no, increasing contrast is not another way to do this. You'll end up with a deep fried, bad quality image something like this:
So here's a really simple, basic method for doing it. I'm sure there's plenty of other good ways, but this usually works fine for me, and it's pretty easy too. I've done this tutorial on ibispaint, but the steps are exactly the same on pixlr and photoshop.
Disclaimer: I did this tutorial on my iPad because my phone literally doesn't work, so I'm sorry if this looks a bit different to how it does on a phone.

Step 1
Open up your model and select the brush tool. Change the colour to white and select the airbrush, or if you're using photoshop or pixlr, reduce the hardness of the brush to the minimumStep 2
Go to layers and add a new empty one
