The drive to the hospital was even more awkward than the drive had been from Karaoke Dokie to Andre's house the night prior. The only difference seemed to be that it was bright outside rather than dark. But luckily, the hospital was only about 20 minutes away, so the drive, while awkward, was short.
When they entered Jade's room, Tori didn't notice anything different from the first time that they had been here, the day that Ms. West and Liam saved them from Mr. West's freak out. Jade was laying on her hospital bed in the same position. Her hair was still sprawled out across the pillow, hints of teal and purple mixed with the dark brown that almost looked like a black. Her IVs and nasal cannula were still there, as were her bandages on her right arm; although the bandages looked newer than last time. They must have been replaced. Jade's eyes were still closed, as was her mouth, and her skin was the same pale shade. She was wearing the same hospital gown. And she still was in a coma.
The heart monitor beeped at a steady rate near her bedside, and the group dispersed to opposite sides of the room and sat down awkwardly. Tori, Cat, and Robbie sat on her left, while Beck and Andre sat on her right. Andre looked like he was looking for the right words to say, and it was only then when Tori remembered that neither Robbie nor Andre had visited Jade, yet. They didn't really know how bad her predicament was.
"'Man..." Andre said at last. "I knew that Jade was tough, but...I never knew that she was capable of fighting this much damage."
Beck nodded. "I'm just glad that she's alive." He said. "You can tell she's fighting, though. And Jade's not one to give up easily." They all nodded, but went into silence again, before Cat piped in,
"How long do you think it's gonna be?" Beck looked from Jade to Cat.
"I'm sorry?"
"Till Jade wakes up." Cat specified. "I mean, it's been two weeks already. How long is Jade gonna sleep before she gets tired of sleeping? There's only so much sleep a person can take." She tapped her finger to her chin. "Although, one time my brother was asleep for four months. But I think Jade's coma is different."
"I would hope so, but I also wouldn't." Robbie remarked, looking at Cat with concern.
"Don't worry." Cat said. "He's awake, now."
They fell into silence again. Andre began to hum Jade's song, You Don't Know Me, to the beat of the heart monitor, as if the monitor was a metronome. But when Tori heard his voice slowly speed up, she looked at him.
"You're going too fast."
Andre looked at her, confused. "I'm going to the tempo of the monitor."
"Guys, I don't think it's Andre that's going fast..." Cat said, her voice shaking.
The rest of the gang went silent. Beck started hyperventilating. They all looked at the heart monitor. It was beeping faster. And faster. It was beeping too fast.
"Hey," Beck said, his voice almost slurring. He jerked his head towards the door, shoving out of his chair. "Hey!!" He said, louder and clearer, trying to get the attention of passing doctors and nurses. "HEY!!! Please, something's wrong!!!" Now that got the nurses' attention. Two came rushing in, their faces filling with worry as soon as they saw Jade's monitor.
"We need you kids to leave, now." One of the nurses ordered, and as the other four made their way to the door, Beck just stood there, staring in horror as the nurses stuck even more needles in Jade's arms and put a breathing mask over her mouth and nose.
Andre and Robbie walked back into the room, beside Beck. Andre snapped his fingers in front of Beck's face a few times before saying, "Come on, they need to take care of Jade. We've gotta go." When he got no response, he and Robbie took Beck by his arms and began dragging him out of the room.
