The ground was soft, soggy the day they first met. It had previously rained, and you could hear the soft squish wherever you stepped on the grass. Their eyes met for a second, a fleeting glance from far away, something all too familiar in the tears that melted into rain. It's a sick solace, and they're both aware. They know that pain is not eternal, suffering is not perpetual. Yet, seeing someone experience those same feelings is more comforting than a million expressions of woe and sorrow.
Because the empty ache that fills your heart after seeing your brother's casket being lowered into the ground cannot be filled with something as wholesome as love.
No. The ache grows, spreads like a virus. It aggravates, begging to be cleansed from the system, but the virus isn't treated with tender love and adoration as it should be. Instead, it's treated with drugs and late nights with no sleep. It's filled with the warm beds of strangers and stumbling blindly into your apartment with a bruised neck and inner thighs and tear-stained cheeks at 4am. It's filled with the disappointed eyes of parents and seeing the ghost of your brother no matter how much you drink or sleep or wish that it had been you instead of him.
Even then, the virus can never fully subside. It always lingers, waiting for an especially bad day to come back, as if to say remember me?
So you stop trying to forget it anymore.
