Somewhere Someday

The sun starts to set, and as the vermillion-colored sky slowly turns into a shade of dark blue, sparkling lights and lush decorations fill an open garden-inspired patio . Handymen, event organizers and other staff are busy with the last-minute additions; elements which will make JC’s dinner date preparations more romantic.

A series of small white lights hang along lengthy shrubs and a hired orchestra plays sweet classical music at the side, facing a mini round table for two at the center. It is indeed a serene and tranquil venue for a hearty dinner.

“You look good, Sir.” A tall Chinese but English-speaking butler fixes JC’s bow tie. The boy brushes his left shoulder as he feels awkward wearing an expensive gray Armani suit. His butler instructs him to stand up straight and feel confident.

“Thanks, Jet. But I’m nervous. What if I she don’t come?” JC bows his head down as he rubs his freezing palms, with breathing becoming fast.

“Just be ready, Sir. If she comes, be thankful… if not, accept the outcome. The good thing is, your friendship will still remain.” The butler shares his thoughts. “And I must say, for a 19 year-old suitor, this is considered a grand effort.” He smiles as he looks around the patio, seeing the overall arrangements.

JC does not want to call or text Hanna. Instead, he will rely on patience and trust, after previously telling her that the date is at 7:00pm, with a given map and address. As the sky fully turns to black, the boy grabs a glass of fresh cold water from the roaming waiter’s tray to soothe his dry throat.

“Alfred, I told you to plot the coordinates and determine whether it’s a slope or not!” Hanna insinuates her student to finish his Math task. “Looks like Munchy is distracting you. I should have not let you bring him inside the study room.” She continuously complains.

“I’m sorry! I thought I would just solve for the coordinates.” Alfred moves his head in arrogance as he gets his paper back. Before graphing the points, he moves down and feeds another carrot to his pet rabbit, as it meekly sits down on the floor, happily nibbling on the orange-colored vegetable.

“Alfred! Finish your work! I would still attend a date.” Hanna is becoming impatient as she deeply sighs, waiting for the guy to complete his exercise.

“Yes, ma’am!” Alfred exclaims in sarcasm, with his hands starting to graph a line. “So you’re finally giving him your sweet Yes.” He opens up another topic with his teacher.

“Yeah. He courts me consistently and I think he deserves to be given a Yes. A few hours more and we will be going steady.” Hanna looks up, smiling, as she imagines a romantic date with her soon-to-be boyfriend.

“Well, good luck. May you live happily ever after!” Alfred sarcastically smirks, putting pressure into the last point of his graph, deep enough to destroy the paper.
