All grandmothers tell stories.

The one that your grandmother had told you, you promised you would never forget. At the age of four nothing had mesmerised you as much as the folk tales you'd hear especially the one of extraterrestrial beings living above and below you. You cherished them like little children cherished Christmas presents or chocolates or like billionaires cherish may cherish a rice cooker they won in a game.

You weren't sure if you believed in them anymore, because like memories fade so does childhood. However, there was this one story that ran along the lines:

"We all have guardian angels and no matter what, they just want to keep us happy. However, we must never know who they are. Their existence is so fragile that if we were to ever discover them..."

And fate made sure you never forgot it.
