And so the two young women spent each morning this week fighting over nothing. Contradiction was unacceptable behaviour for a maid, so the Lady Morgana found it necessary to give her extra tasks. This made the blonde ten times angrier, making sure it would be mentioned the next morning. And so the maid got even more tasks, which made her once again angrier. This cycle was becoming their daily routine. The blonde was getting sick of it. And the Lady Morgana, well, she had more important matters to think about.

Morgana's POV

I'll have to do it myself. I'll be the one to kill the king. And I'm going to do it with magic. I went to the forbidden section of the library yesterday evening and found a book with spells. The church bells chime three times. I've given Kara enough work for a whole week so she shouldn't be back for at least a couple of hours. I'd be surprised if she even dared to show her face again. I may have been a little too harsh today.

But she has to pay for what she's done. I have to admit though, my heart is slowly forgiving her. But I don't like that. I can't just turn back and suddenly be nice to her. No, I wouldn't even be able to do that. Not with the pain she has caused me. But I am going to rid myself of my sorrow now. I open the big, dusty book and read it through.

My eye gets caught by a picture of a man who's limbs are fused together so that he's just one solid block of flesh. Disgusted, I flip the page. And I keep flipping until I find the perfect spell. I will turn him into a fish and keep him in a bowl in my chamber so that I will be the one from then on he'll have to listen to. A squeak makes me turn around, but I see no one. Then I look done and see a cute little mouse. I smirk, I guess someone has just volunteered.

Another week passes and this time the blonde maid is not being constantly snapped at. In fact, the Lady Morgana doesn't speak to her at all. All Kara hears is the ringing noise, day in day out. She knows exactly where it's coming from, but wants to deny it.

Kara's POV

'Alex?'

I need to tell someone or I might go insane. I need to hear her say that it's impossible for the king's ward to be a sorceress.

'Yeah? What's wrong? I thought you enjoyed my soup last time. Don't go whining again.'

I let out a snort. 'It's not that, Alex, your soup looks great. I just wanted t-to hear your perspective on something that's been on my mind for a while.'

Alex sits down in silence while giving me a look that says 'go on'.

'I told you already that Lady Morgana hasn't said a word to me for six days or something right?', Alex nods, 'Well, I might know why that is. I keep hearing that ringing noise that indicates that someone is using magic. So, I followed it a few days ago and well, I'm not completely sure, but uhm I think Morgana is the source... Please tell me I'm crazy.'

I'm surprised by Alex's reaction. I expected her to laugh and say I'm indeed being ridiculous. But she seems to be seriously considering the idea.

'That would be too bad for her, being the king's ward and all. But that would explain why she wants the king dead. His hatred of magic must infuriate her. And then what happened to her previous maid, that must have consumed her with anger. And she is probably using you as an outlet, for now.'

'And with "for now" you mean she will soon take it out on the king and that's why she is practicing magic? Like she is doing right now by the way, I can hear it.'

'Yes', Alex grabs my hands and looks at me intensely, 'Look, I've been in this place for a little longer than you and believe me, the Lady Morgana was a wonderful, kind-hearted person. She just needs to be reminded of that again. And if anyone can bring out the good in people, it's you Kara.'
