I woke up to the sound of groggy voices singing what sounded like happy birthday but was a little off tune - actually way off tune lol - and the smell of chocolate cake. "Happy Birthday my baby" said mom kissing and brushing my cheek, "So how does it feel being eighteen?" she asked with excitement plastered on her face. "Mom it's been two seconds I don't know" I said shaking my head and laughing lightly.

The fam walked out of my room after each having a slice of chocolate cake - yes we ate it in my room, my mom made an exception since it was my birthday - luckily it was a Sunday so no one was rushing anywhere.

I took my phone and opened my Whatsapp - sighs - time to reply to these fake birthday wishes - face palm - I mean don't get me wrong I appreciate people wishing me happy birthday and posting me on their status updates but the energy feels all too fake for my liking.

After almost a whole hour of texting and replying to the happy birthday's I noticed something, Sky hadn't texted me happy birthday or even called me, oh well he probably will do so later I thought, but he didn't.

Dealbreaker

You don't forget your girlfriend's birthday.

It was probably my mixed emotions towards Sky lately that made me find this a dealbreaker but either way I wasn't going to let Sky get away with this.

A ping signalling a notification on my phone snapped me out of my thoughts

It was Jaden...

Jae : Hey kid

Me : What's up asshole

Jae : lol ouch, hud?

Jae : Hey listen... a friend of mine is asking for your digits. I tried explaining to him that you not exactly a people's person but he won't back down so should I give him?

Me : Yeah sure it's cool

Jae : Oh! And happy birthday kid, you little legal eagle!

Me : Wow Jae lol

After texting back and forth with Jaden for a while I received a text from an unkown number. I stared at my phone for a while then let out a breath I hadn't realised I was holding Here goes nothing. "I really hope it's not another weirdo, we have enough of those in the science class" I thought out loud before opening the text.

+365 : Hey

Me : Hi

typing...typing...typing...

+365 :  My name is Brandon but my friends call me Brad.
I got your number from Jaden, I hope you don't mind. I'd like to get to know you if that's okay with you...

Me : My favourite colour is black, my favourite food is burger and chips, my favourite chocolate flavour is mint, I'm 5.2 feet tall and I can't sing to save my life.

If that's all I'd like to get back to my homework now...

Yes I lied about having homework but I'm really not the social type, I like to keep my circle as small as possible, and yes that may have been a bit rude but he didn't know me, I didn't know him and I wasn't planning on getting to know him so I was trying to keep this as short as possible.

typing...typing...typing...

Brad : lol that's very informative but I would much rather like to know about your dreams and aspirations, your strengths and weaknesses, your ambitions...

What the hell??? I mean not in a bad way. No one has ever cared to ask me that. I have to admit it, I was impressed.

We texted each other back and forth for the rest of the day and night and the next day and night...

I felt like I had known Brad forever, I never got tired of talking to him. It must be because of how constructive our conversations were. It felt refreshing to have conversations about what my goals are for the next five years rather than what is the colour of my underwear.

However as the saying goes all good things come to an end. I'm not referring to the our conversations or anything but Brad finally revealed his true intentions three weeks after putting up a facade about just wanting pure friendship.

Brad : So Lu I was wondering...

Yes he got me a nickname - internally blushing - He said it was his way of making things feel more casual between us, although I didn't see the need because we got along like a house on fire and even if we didn't,  I doubt a nickname would be able to change that.

Me : Yes...

Brad : Is the beautiful miss cuffed?

Shxt I have a boyfriend! Wait... where was Sky anyway? I hadn't heard from him since before my birthday. I brushed that thought to the back of my head, I'd have to ask Sky's friend Calvin about it tommorow.
