A/N: AU where Edgeworth's father didn't die and so he didn't switch schools.

It was the end of the school day, and Miles, Phoenix, and Larry were at their lockers.

"Guys! Look!" Larry said excitedly.

He held a flyer for the school dance that was coming up.

"Aannnd?...what are you getting at, Larry?" Miles asked.

"Uh, we gotta go, duhhh. This is our chance to score some dates!" Larry replied.

"Oh, come on, Larry. We're freshmen, we don't need dates to this silly dance." Miles said.

"But...Edjyyyyyy, we'll look so lame if we show up without dates!" Larry whined.

"Umm, yeah, Larry, we're only fourteen. Aren't we a little young to be dating?" Phoenix said.

"It's a school dance, Nicky, not marriage." Larry groaned.

"Look, fellas, I know you're both pretty shy, so don't worry, lady's man Larry will help you get girlfriends." he said.

"You? A lady's man?" Miles scoffed.

"Hey!" Larry replied offended.

"And save yourself the trouble of embarrassing yourself, I don't need or want a girlfriend." Miles told him.

"How come?" Larry asked.

"Do I need a reason?" Miles replied.

"Larry, leave him be. Don't pressure him to do something he obviously doesn't want to do." Phoenix said.

"Gee, sorry, I didn't mean to pressure anyone, honest." Larry said frowning guiltily.

"It's alright, Larry, we know you have good intentions." Phoenix said giving his friend a pat on the back.

"Okay, no girlfriend for Edjy. Phoenix, do you still want one?" Larry asked him.

"Sure, it won't hurt to try." Phoenix shrugged.

Suddenly, Miles felt something in his stomach clench and he started to feel very upset.

"Miles? Are you okay?" Phoenix asked.

"Yeah, dude, it kinda looks like you're about to cry or something." Larry added.

"I-I don't know what you are talking about...I'm fine." Miles replied a bit harsher than intended.

Embarrassed, Miles runs out of the school and all the way home. When he got home, he went straight to his room without even saying hello to his father. Miles flops onto his bed and buries his face in his pillow, crying.

"Miles? Miles, what's wrong?" Gregory asked coming into his son's room and seeing that he was upset.

He sits on the edge of the bed and rubs Miles's back in comfort.

"Nothing, Father." Miles replied trying to stop crying.

"Did something happen at school? You know you can talk to me about it." Gregory told his son.

Miles sits up and sits next to his father as he wipes at his eyes with his sleeve.

"I'm not sure you would even understand." Miles sighed.

"Well, I won't know unless you tell me." Gregory replied.

"*sigh*...It's about the school dance that's coming up. The person that I like....was talking about going with someone else." Miles explained.

"Ah, I'm sorry, son. Why would you think I wouldn't understand?" Gregory said putting an arm around his son.

"Because...the one I like...is a boy." Miles mumbled, not looking his father in the eye.

"Are you...disappointed in me?" he asked.

"For what, Miles?" Gregory asked confused.

"For not being normal." Miles answered.

"Oh, Miles, normal is a relative term. One person's normal is different from another's." Gregory said hugging his son gently.

The young teen just sits there and lets himself be held by his father.

"It's Phoenix, isn't it?" Gregory asked.

"How did you know?" Miles asked.

"Son, I've seen the way you look at that boy." Gregory answered.

"Have you told him about how you feel?" he asked.

"No! And I never will. If he knew, he'll probably won't want to be my friend anymore." Miles said shaking his head 'no'.

"Phoenix would never do that to you." Gregory said.

"I can't know that for sure, and I'm not taking any chances." Miles argued.

"Miles, if you don't tell him, it's just gonna eat you up inside." Gregory sighed.

"But, I don't want to lose him as a friend....Phoenix and Larry are the only friends I have and probably will ever have. If I ruin that I'll be all alone!" Miles replied, starting to cry again.

He goes back to his previous position, with his face buried in his pillow.

"I wish to be alone right now, Father." Miles said.

"Are you sure?" Gregory asked frowning.

"Yes, please." Miles begged.

"Alright, I'll come let you know when dinner's ready." Gregory said as he left his son's room.

For the next few days, Miles completely avoids Phoenix and Larry. Now, they think that they've done something that made Miles mad at them.

"We gotta figure out what we did so that we can apologize and all be friends again." Phoenix said.

"Well, that's gonna be hard. Edjy's not even talking to us, so how are we gonna figure out whatever it is that we did." Larry replied.

"Oh my god, you're right...what if Miles never wants to talk to us again!" Phoenix said freaking out.

"Okay, that's it! On the way to the school dance tomorrow, we're going over to his house and demand that he talk to us. I refuse to let the Signal Samurai be torn apart because of some stupid thing we probably did." Larry declared.

"Are you sure we should do that? What if that just makes things worse?" Phoenix asked worriedly.

"We gotta do something!" Larry replied.

On the night of the school dance, Miles sits at the kitchen table picking at his dinner.

"Miles, please eat something. You'll make yourself sick if you don't eat properly." Gregory said concerned.

"Sorry...but I'm just not hungry, Father." Miles replied.

The doorbell rings.

"I'll get it." Miles said leaving the table.

He opens the door and saw that Larry and Phoenix were standing on his front porch...with their dates. Seeing how pretty the girl his crush was taking to the dance just further proved the fact that Phoenix will never return Miles's feelings. And that thought nearly made him burst into tears right then and there, but he bit the inside of his cheek to keep himself from doing so...he didn't want to embarrass himself in front of everyone.
