ALL DAY I HAVE BEEN AVOIDING Brent, Maya, and Nick. I rode with Gaberial and Hailey to school then I went straight to class. I sat in the very front while Brent and Nick sat in the back.
When Brent saw me sitting in the front row, hurt flashed across his face. Then he sat down in the back in his usual seat.
As for the rest of my classes before lunch, I did the same thing. When lunch rolled around, I went to the library. I needed a new book anyways.
I was scanning the books for one that popped out to me. I stopped walking when I saw a pink spine with bright yellow letters. I picked it out when Nick's face appeared in front of me.
I jumped back, and I dropped my book. Nick walked around the shelf, and he picked up my book. I grabbed it from his hands, silently.
"Cam, I'm sorry that I kept the secret. I never meant to hurt you. I'm sorry," Nick apologized as his lip twitched from trying his best not to cry.
"Why didn't you tell me? I'm your sister, Nick," I asked him, putting the book back on the shelf.
"Let me start from the beginning so you understand why I didn't tell you," Nick started, making me look at him. "I didn't even know about their relationship until I found Maya texting Brent a year into their relationship. I was so angry at him for not telling me, but I forgave him.
When they broke up the summer before you came, Brent was heartbroken. And when I mean heartbroken, I mean heartbroken. Campbell, he went to drinking every night."
My eyes widen at that new information. I thought Brent didn't drink. Then again I thought Brent didn't do a lot of things.
"After a month, I had enough. His parents were gone, Xavier was out partying, and Nessa would stay at her grandma's house every night. I got him sober, and I got him back on his feet. He promised me not to tell anybody because he felt embarrassed. That's the reason why I didn't tell anybody. I was scared he would go back to his old habits."
I took in all of that new information.
"And this is not me defending him, this is me telling you the truth," Nick added, softly.
"Why did they break up anyways?" I asked him.
He sighed before saying,"Maya cheated on him four times. He had no idea about it since she was in New York, and he was here. It was only when he went to visit her, and he found her kissing somebody else.He thought he could trust her, but turns out he couldn't. He was planning to tell you so many times, but then he saw how happy you were and he didn't want to mess it up.
Maya was going to tell you just to make Brent angry, but he made her promise at her game. That's the reason they left for a few minutes. He was telling her that he didn't want her, and he would never will. He also told her that she needed to leave you two alone," Nick explained, scratching the back of his neck.
