An explosion rattled the battlefield.

You staggered, pressing your hand against the side of the ruins you'd ducked behind, watching as sparks of blue shot past you. Pelna appeared in a shower of magic, slicing deep into the thick skin of a monster, who roared and staggered in a spray of blood that coated half of his uniform. He had no time to regard you before he was warping off again to engage a Magitek trooper.

To call this battle a clusterfuck would have been the understatement of the century. This was a fuckfest, a trainwreck of the highest degree, and even enough to cut back on the usual mid-fight banter.

The mission had started off simple - another skirmish between the Glaives and the Empire's forces that had quickly turned south as the Empire began to overwhelm you with sheer numbers. Magitek soldiers, monsters, Magitek armors, you name it, it was probably marching across the natural bridge spanning over an enormous chasm.

It had been day-in-day-out fighting for the past week, and you were beginning to feel it take its toll on you. Conserving stamina wasn't anything you didn't know how to do, but after only a few hours of restless sleep before being thrown back into the fray was a little bit more than you could handle.

You flung out a Protect as a daemon launched itself at you, jaws snapping, and threw your knife at it, embedding it between the eyes. You warped after it, fingers curling around the hilt and tugged, dragging the knife through the skin and falling with the daemon as it hit the dirt. You rolled, sprinting for cover.

"All units, move to secure the wall," you heard Luche command. "If they break through we're done!"

While ordinarily, that order would have gotten him a few snarky responses, everyone was too focused on fighting for their lives to respond. You sprinted for the east end of the wall - where several daemons with far too many legs and huge jaws dripping with miasma - were looking to advance over. Glaives intent on escaping to the backline to recuperate were forced to reposition, injuries and all, warping as fast and as far away as possible.

You warped into a few Magitek soldiers, driving one knife into the armor of one and dropping to the dusty ground, palm pressed to it. Frost spread from your fingertips to the ground and exploded up in an icy gust of wind that nearly whipped your hood right off your head. Frost and ice encased the nearest soldiers and you wasted no time shattering the glass statues you'd just made.

"What's the holdup, Crowe?" Libertus shouted.

"Almost there-" Crowe's voice was tight with strain. Above your head, you could see the telltale signs of the magma tornado the Mages were working together to summon. There was a heavy thump over the comms - a noise that made your skin crawl as Crowe cried out, alarmed. "No!"

"Crowe, status?" Drautos demanded.

"Mage down, but we can't stop the process at this point!" Crowe grunted. "Just gonna power through. Buy us a little more time!"

"Time is not a luxury we have right now!" Tredd snapped. "East wall's going down - the Niffs brought out the artillery again!" As soon as he finished, another explosion rattled the bridge, sending dust and debris everywhere. You scrambled up the side off the wall, running over options in your head to protect the dwindling defenses. "Pelna, can you get to me?"

"Lucis isn't paying us refugees enough-" Pelna grunted and there was an electric crackle of a Thundara being released on his end, "-for this!"

"I'm at the east wall, Tredd, I can see if I can get to you!" you reported.
