******************************************************
“What was that?!” a young girl mutters. She looks maybe sixteen or seventeen. She has dirty blonde hair that runs down in wavy curls that stop at her shoulder. She has striking green eyes with small freckles that run across the bridge of her nose. She is stunning.
“I don’t know, just stay low and let me handle this.” A man replies, he looks a little bit older than I do, maybe twenty. He has jet black hair gelled into tiny spikes at the front, and wears a pure white muscle shirt that makes his pale skin look tanned. It looks like these two people could be a couple.
The man stands up immediately with his hands lifted in the air. Who does this guy think he is? I am equipped with a gun, several knives, smoke grenades, and most importantly my water ability. That’s one this I have this guy doesn’t.
So far, the plan is going along smoothly. After I had my meeting with Dr. Sinestra, I had a debriefing with an elite team of human and infected spies. The only difference between me and them though, is that they chose to be with Dr. Sinestra. Me, no. I was forced against my will. I can’t afford to lose my parents once again.
My training consisted of fighting techniques, mental strategy practice, and element training. My water-abled instructor said I am very capable with my power. One of the best trainee’s he has had in a while.
Once my training was done, they told me objective, and I remember is vividly. Become part of them, make them trust you. When they least expect it, we will breach and clear and have control of one of the biggest elemental bases in the world! Those were the exact words from Dr. Sinestra’s mouth.
“Whoever you are show yourself.” A low grumble came from in front of me, coming from behind a rack of women’s jeans. It must be the paranoid man again. I slowly stand up with my hands raised, making my torso and my head visible. Almost right away the man started to attack.
He kicks the rack or jeans with such a blunt force that is smashes into my chest and makes me fall back down again. I get back up again, wheezing heavily. That blow to the chest winded me. I don’t know why Dr. Sinestra picked me, out of all people, I have asthma I can barely run, let alone fight. I want to use my water powers so badly right now, but my training instincts tell me not to.
We stare at each other for a moment, he tries to punch me again but I was prepared this time, I easily slide to my left dodging his punch and then lean forwards and give him the hardest right uppercut I can make. I hit him directly in the nose and he stutters backwards in dizziness. This is my chance. My chance to get the upper hand in this fight, I sprint up to the man now lying on the ground covering the blood flow that is gushing in his nose.
Before I get any closer to him, the beautiful girl I heard earlier is standing in my way blocking my path from hitting the guy once again. “Get away!!!” she yells, her voice filled with rage and fury. Her eyes are gleaming with malice.
“Uh…Um… I was lost. I heard noise coming from this store so I headed in this direction.” I answer back nervously. This girl looks like she is about to explode. She keeps staring at me filled with anger, she slowly raises her hands up into the same stance that the guy now lying on the floor had.
“You leave Asher and I, ALONE!” she shouts at the top of her lungs. Right as she does that, fire emerges from her hands into a tiny ball. She levitates it in the air and then fires it at me with all the power she can muster up. I instinctively raise my hands up for protection flinching to prepare for the searing burning sensation that is about to happen. But that never happens.
I stare at my hands to see why my hands are not blazing on fire. They weren’t burning because in my own hands a glowing ball of clear blue water is surrounding me. I am in a encased shield ball of water.
I look through the water bubble around me and see the furious girl standing in front of me slowly walking towards me continuously firing her weak attempt of a fireball at me. Her eyes are glowing completely red. Her eyes are as red as the fire emerging from her hands and as red as the blood that is still dripping out of Asher’s nose leaving stains all over his blood crusted shirt. The young woman trying to kill me seems to be getting frustrated about something. I can tell by her facial expressions. My mother used to tell me that body language is seventy percent of how humans show their emotions, whether they like it or not, and thirty percent by what they say. Her eyes are squinted angrily as beads of sweat drip down the edge of her eyebrow.
“Might as well give up,” I say laughing at the fact that this girl continuously tries to burn me up into flames but is failing. “Why don’t you try roasting a pig or something.”
“Who are you?!” Asher asks curiously.
“Layton Andrews.” I reply obediently. If I want these people to trust me, I need to be honest. Honesty is the key to trust, and trust is the key to honestly.
“Put down your weapons, if you may have any.” The girl answers with a new tone of voice. Seriousness.
I unhook my gun, knives, grenades, and high tech instrument I have hiding in various places of my uniform. Once I retrieve everything I was hiding from them I toss it on the floor right below the guy now names Asher’s feet. He picks each item up and examines them for a little bit.
“Why are you here…?” Asher asks once again.
“I was walking around in the street, looking for somewhere new to live. Another infected man…like us,” I point at his stamp that as a bold 29 printed on it. “Told me to look for the ruins of an Empire State building. He said they could help me out.” I say hoping they believe my carefully concocted lie.
“Oh. Well that just happens where we came from.” Asher replies cautiously. He wipes his forehead with the bottom of his newly-red-dyed shirt.
“Could I perhaps have a ride to the Underground? It would mean the world.” I say giving him the most friendliest smile I can create.
“Well…I guess so. I need to make sure I can trust you though, so you will have to be cuffed while we drive home.” Asher replies handing girl all of my equipment and takes a pair of small handcuffs from his back pocket. He walks towards me and yanks my arms behind my back and cuffs them tightly, making the cold metal dig into my skin leaving small cuts.
Perfect. Step one of Dr. Sinestra’s plan can be checked off of my list. We drive home in silence as I think so myself. Great, that couldn’t have went down any better. I became a part of them, step two? Gain their trust.
