Lilac hugged herself as she slipped her wand back in her sleeve and sunk to the ground. She leaned her head back and fell asleep.
'This is going to be a bit of a ride.' she thought as she drifted off.
She didn't know how long she was asleep, but she was suddenly awoken when she felt oddly cold for no reason. When she opened her eyes she saw a dementor just inches in front of her. She scrambled to her feet and tried to slip around the corner without attracting attention. But she was unsuccessful and the dementor rounded upon her.
Without thinking, she drew her wand. She thought it wouldn't work, because she hadn't learned it yet, but she shouted anyway "Expecto Patronum!"
Surprised at the outcome, Lilac watched a fox dance around her. Lilac fled as the white fox danced around at the dementor; keeping it at bay. Lilac ran around a corner further down the street and stopped to catch her breath.
The woman she'd talked to earlier appeared next to her "You're a witch?!"
Lilac slid her wand into her sleeve "I didn't think that would work. I hadn't been taught that one yet."
She looked at her "You're underage?!"
Lilac looked up at her and nodded. She seemed to think she should know this woman. Then it hit her. This was her great grandmother. Lilac choked and tried to run away, but tripped over her feet and hit her head on the pavement. She felt the pain in her head before she blacked out.
___________
When Lilac came to, she was lying on a couch. Sitting up, she realized where she was. Her great grandmother emerged from a room with some papers in her hands.
"Oh, you're awake." she sat down across from Lilac "I'm Tina."
Lilac almost said 'I know', but she caught herself. Instead, she sat up and held out her hand "Jane. Jane Aspen."
She took Lilac's hand and shook it "Nice to meet you, Jane."
Tina gave Lilac some actual clothing so she's not walking around in her pajama's all the time. Lilac changed in a room and when she was finished, she opened the door. She saw a photo on the mantlepiece and stopped to admire it. It was a photo of Tina and Newt, Lilac's great grandfather, standing next to each other.
Lilac was starting to miss not being known. When she was with her family, people who knew that her father was the grandson of Newt Scamander stopped them in the street. A lot of them wanted to meet the famed wizard and thought Lilac's father could make it happen, but some of them were Lilac's age and just thought they weren't able to play with her because she had famous family.
Lilac, instinctively, reached up to her neck and pulled out her necklace. Her grandfather had given it to her when she went off to Hogwarts for the first time. Lilac opened it and looked down into the faces of her parents, smiling up at her. She suddenly thought about something crazy, but it was worth a shot.
She waited a little bit, because Tina had left. When she returned, Lilac said she wanted talk to her. Sitting on the couch, she said "Okay. So this is kind of crazy, but.... magic usually is. I'm not from here."
Tina gave a bit of a laugh "I know. You're from England, Jane."
Lilac gave a reluctant smile "No. I'm not from here. Meaning this time period." at Tina's look of confusion, she went on "That's why I asked what the date was."
Tina seemed to understand it a little bit "Okay. Did you use a time turner or something?"
Lilac shook her head "No. I used...." she stopped, trying to find an explanation that didn't sound crazy "....my brother and I were looking for hidden passages at school and we came across a room with nothing, but a table and spinning wheel. When I touched the spinning wheel, it felt like a portkey, but it took me back in time."
Tina nodded, but Lilac saw on her face the confusion. Tina sighed "Okay. I think I might be able to help you. But not on my own. We'll Newt's help."
Lilac hid a smile and stopped herself from saying 'That doesn't surprise me.' even though she really wanted to. She really just wanted to meet her younger great grandfather and see if he has always been quiet and shy. Tina stood up and beckoned Lilac to follow her. Lilac followed out the door and down the street.
Tina slipped into an alley and Lilac followed. Tina turned toward Lilac "Jane? Have you apparated before? You know, Side-Along Apparation?"
Lilac nodded. She stopped herself from saying 'I've apparated with you before.' and instead said "I've apparated with my great grandmother before." she felt that was safe. She wasn't giving a name, but she could still talk very little about them.
Tina held out her hand. Lilac took it and the two disappeared into the air. When they reappeared, Lilac saw they were on a boat that had just left the New York dock. Tina headed off somewhere, leaving Lilac alone to explore to the best of her ability. There were mostly certainly guards who were looking for people to throw below deck.
Lilac was walking down one hall when she ran into a little girl. She was no older than two. She had green eyes and blonde hair, just the slightest bit darker than Lilac's.
The girl pointed at her and shouted "You ain't s'posed to be here!"
Lilac looked down at her "You shouldn't be speaking full sentences!"
The girl burst out in tears. Lilac knew that what she said was an awful thing to say to a toddler, but she didn't want to be caught. The child's mother came out of their room and scooped the girl up in her arms. Lilac did a double take, locking eye contact with the woman.
She had heard stories about her great great aunt, but she never thought she'd actually see her. 'Queenie? Was that what her name was?' was all she could hear in her thoughts.
She turned the corner and almost knocked Tina over "Oh, sorry-" Lilac stopped and corrected herself "-Tina." she'd almost said 'Nana'.
Tina smiled "It's alright, Jane." she started to walk around the corner, but turned back. She looked shocked. Lilac heard her say under her breath "Why is Queenie here?"
So her name was Queenie! Back in Lilac's timeline, Tina had always refrained from talking about Queenie for an extended amount. Lilac and her brother's really only knew about Queenie, because their great grandfather told them everything he could about her. Lilac knows that when Queenie and her nana were young, their parents died of Dragon Pox. But, she had to be told by other's about Queenie's most "recent" past.
Her papa(great grandfather) had told them that Queenie was locked up in Azkaban because she worked with Grindelwald. She died there later that year from the harsh conditions and pneumonia. It broke her nana's heart, her papa said she didn't leave their room for seven days.
Lilac and Tina successfully made it to England after three days of sneaking food from kitchens and sleeping below deck to avoid being caught. When they heard the horn blow to signal they were close to arriving, Tina took hold of Lilac's hand and disapparated.
The two appeared on a cobblestone road with yellow brick Victorian townhouses standing in a row. Lilac had only heard stories of her papa's old home, but she never thought they were actually that small. Tina walked out onto the sidewalk and just stood there. Newt walked out onto the front porch, as if he were about to head out. But he saw Tina and his case fell to the floor; making a bit of a ruckus on the porch.
He ran up and, without thinking was Lilac's guess, hugged Tina. He pulled back awkward, but not quickly. Lilac saw reluctance as he pulled away.
"Tina, what are you doing here?" he asked.
Tina pulled him into a hug "I came across a girl who says she's from the future. She needs help getting back."
