The Tikwi is an ancient urban legend. This creature also goes by the name Tik Tik and various other versions of the animal. One name, Manananggal means "To separate", which is what they do. This strange creature is a bit of a shape shifter and can take the form of any animal. They traditionally use the form of a bat or demonic bird. They separate from the lower half of their body and use wings to roam around at night. They have a recognisable high pitched sound: "Tikwiii... Tikwiii..."
There are many different versions of the story that have many different endings to encountering one. Some say that they cut you in half with a scythe so you become one of them. Others tell that they rip out your heart and feast on your body if you are caught by a Tikwi. No one has ever lived to tell which one is true.
You are walking home one night after working a late shift. It's about 2 AM, and you are on your way to the bus stop. Suddenly, you hear that noise. "Tikwiii... Tikwiii...". You're worried, but think nothing of it. There is a gentleman at the bus stop near you. Judging by the look on his face, you can guess that he heard it, too.
On the way home on the bus, the noise starts again. This time you are genuinely scared. But it's ok, you're on a safe bus with other people. Besides, the noise is getting quieter and quieter, fading away. By the time you get home, you can't even hear it anymore. You fall asleep quickly, exhausted.
The next day at work, you are talking to a colleague about your experience. When you mention the sound, they immediately know what you are talking about. But you eyes grow white and your skin turns pale as they explain the Tikwi.
"You're lucky to be alive. Tikwis are master tricksters. The further away they sound, the closer they are. If the noise fades to a stop, it's right behind you."
