Thank you WildChildMary for lending me Angel
Though investigations had allowed Peter and his men to approach the said cave where the pirates were hiding, it had only resulted in a large scuffle.
Alexander and Jaska had captured some pirates and had interrogated them, yet the pirates preferred to slice their own throats with the daggers they had stashed secretly in their coats than to talk to them.
In retaliation, some guards of Peter's company had been killed, and warnings had been drawn in blood to back off if there was to be peace.
Peter could not risk further confrontation with them and provoke Dani, or Jason, so all he did was set up extra security.
People were afraid and even the approaching holidays seemed tense.
Still, there was no movement, and though Ville had tried to bribe the ammunition dealer, to go through political routes, the man refused to say who his buyer was.
Alexi was furious, there was nothing apparently illegal going on and he was afraid that sooner or later something horrible was going to take place.
Capturing more pirates on Jason's or Dani's side or mercenaries for that matter was not going to yield further results, only more blood.
Added to that many began arguing that Peter, Ville, and Alexi had no right to be here, that parley was not possible as they were just honest fishermen, retired from pirating.
Without proof, there was no reason to take them in.
As good as Gerard was at his trade; it just earned him a black eye and a beating from some pirate spies. It was frustrating for everyone.
The cold did not help as winter had finally begun to settle in the trees were lying almost dead across the fields, and no birds sang.
There was not a sound but that of the chimney crackling, and the wind blowing as a snowstorm was coming in. Snow began to cover every crevice of the city.
It adorned the rooftops with blankets of snow and crystal-like snowflakes. It looked picture perfect, even amongst the despondency of the stench coming from the drainage of the plumbing systems, and the ever-looming threat of these pirates and mercenaries over the horizon.
At least Alexi was there for Angel, and Peter was vigilant of Diana and the other girls. As for Maria's life, Ville was more distant than ever.
It seemed he was ashamed of having kissed her and he was keeping to himself more often. He would only address her for lessons and over dinner or breakfast.
Whenever Maria tried to address that topic he would somehow cast it aside and move on to something else.
He was not trying to be hurtful, but Ville knew he could not give in to his heart, his desires, his feelings for this gentle flower.
It would spell doom, a doom he was all too familiar with. Still, the tension in the house was unbearable, and only knowing that he was providing her with some sort of future kept him sane.
William tried to no avail to tell him that he needed to talk to Maria. Even Lousie scolded him somewhat saying he was being untrue to his heart. Yet, he would not talk about it.
As for Maria, she hoped to one day know if that kiss had meant pity or love. For now, she would have to be patient. Though her heart, body, and soul wanted him.
She wanted to get out for a while and with the cool evening air, maybe clear her mind. Perhaps she would invite Angel to go shopping early for the holidays.
Angel agreed as she was tired of being cooped up after having to rest so much. After all, the birth of her first child had taken a lot out of her.
Therefore, Alexi sent some guards with them and agreed that it was good for Angel and Maria to go out and bond.
They hoped Madame Steele could join them, but she was busier than ever preparing for the holidays, getting ready for the Christmas event at the brothel.
