Natsu groaned irritably, 'Oh man, this stinks! Why do we have to do this anyway?'
'Because you couldn't help destroying half of Notal on our last job,' Lucy snapped. 'This was the only way Master could placate the mayor.'
The storage room smelled like mould and dust and was chock full of boxes and random magically enhanced objects like legendary weapons, objects of power and enchanted clothing. Despite the mass of incredible magic, both wizards found the job incredibly boring.
Natsu pulled a cardboard box above him onto his head, carefully lowering it to the ground. He ripped apart the tape holding it shut and opened the flaps. Inside were bundles of old job fliers, tossed hurriedly and messily. Lucy ticked off "Old Requests" on her clipboard and followed the row to see where they were supposed to replace it.
'Shelf R,' she instructed, searching around for the letter.
Natsu spotted it across the room and hefted the box up, shoving it onto the shelf and straightening it. He returned to Lucy's side to pick up the next box.
'I didn't destroy much,' he complained.
'I'm not sure I'd call half the town "not much,"' Lucy said, peeking inside the container to find stacks of glass cups. 'Shelf G. I'll take that one.'
Natsu let her haul the box to the right shelf and push it on. He picked up her discarded clipboard to find their next objective when a gleam caught his eye. In the corner was a large ovular object, hidden underneath a faded and torn blue blanket.
'Hey, Luce, check this out,' he said.
'What?' she asked, following him around the corner. 'We don't have time to play around.'
'Just come see,' he insisted, pulling off the blanket.
'Fine,' Lucy crossed her arms. 'But I don't see what could be so- Oh wow!'
Underneath they found a gorgeous mirror. It stood on a delicate, curvular stand, and the rim was made of silver, swirls winding around the edges like dazzling snakes. Runes were carved into the pattern around the top.
'It's beautiful,' Lucy breathed.
Natsu stared, open mouthed, 'Yeah, it is. I wonder what it says.'
'Mirror of Yokuboo,' Lucy read aloud. She noticed Natsu staring at her and laughed, scratching the back of her head, 'Too much time around Levy, I guess.'
Natsu looked back at the shinning surface, 'Mirror of Yokuboo, huh? I wonder what it does.'
Lucy shook her head, 'No idea. Well, what do you see in it?'
'I see me, Luce, and you,' he replied.
'Yeah, me too.'
Natsu rested his hands behind his head, 'I guess its just a mirror.'
'Yeah, I guess so,' Lucy said. 'Come on, we better finish this reorganising. I want to be done by the end of the day. I am not coming back here tomorrow.'
'Me either,' Natsu agreed, walking back with her to the center of the room. He picked up the clipboard. 'Hey, you seen a box of flying gloves?'
'Try Shelf H.'
'Hey, Mira, do you know anything about the mirror in the storage room?' Lucy asked the bartender the next day in the guild hall.
'Mirror?' Mirajane repeated. 'Do you mean the Mirror of Yokuboo?'
'Yes!' Lucy exclaimed, clapping her hands down on the bar and standing. 'You know of it?'
'Well of course I know of it,' Mira chuckled sweetly, wiping the inside of a glass. 'There's a legend about it. Supposedly, if you look into it, you can see your heart's deepest desire.'
'Oh,' Lucy sat back down disappointedly and rested her head in her palm. 'I don't think it works then. Natsu and I were down there yesterday and we only saw ourselves.'
'The two of you, huh?' Mira asked with a wink. 'Interesting.'
Lucy flushed, 'Wh-what's the supposed to mean?!'
'Oh, nothing,' Mira smiled. 'I wouldn't worry about it, Lucy. I'm sure the mirror works fine.'
Lucy sighed and slipped off her stool, spotting Wendy beckoning her across the hall, 'If you say so. Talk to you later, Mira.'
As Lucy walked away, Mira allowed herself a secret smile.
'The staff always had looked flimsy,' Lucy grumbled to herself. 'I'm not surprised Master snapped it. Natsu's head always was as thick as a rock.'
Lucy scrunched up her nose, the place smelling just as bad as the last time she was down here. She moved her hand over the smooth surface of the storage room wall, searching for the switch to activate the light lacrima. Finally feeling it, she flicked it on and light flooded the room. Squinting and shielding her eyes to the sudden brightness, Lucy scanned around for the Master's spare staff.
'Why was I even chosen to get it?' she rambled to herself. 'Natsu's head is what broke it. He should have to get the new one.'
She finally found the spare leaning against a cabinet to her right. Sighing, she fetched it and was turning back to the stairs up to the guild when a light made her stop.
Lucy stared, 'The mirror?'
It had only been a week, but the Mirror of Yokuboo had evaporated from her thoughts quickly. Now, back down in the storage room, the memory of their punishment and the magic mirror came back in a rushing torrent.
Temporarily forgetting about the staff, Lucy wandered over to stand in front of the mirror. She examined herself. She did look pretty cute in her short black skirt and pink top if she did say so herself. She'd even managed to wrestle her hair into a neat bun at the base of her neck.
A shimmer next to her reflection caught her eye, but when she saw what it was, she gasped.
Natsu stood next to her, grinning. Lucy turned to look beside her, but was met with empty space. She stared back at the shiny surface, and mirror Natsu beamed back at her. He gave her a thumbs up and laughed.
Lucy yelped, snatched up the staff and ran for the staircase. She fumbled with the light switch and stumbled over the first few steps, but eventually regained her balance. Stopping to catch her breath, she recalled what she'd seen. Natsu appeared in the mirror, but he hadn't been with her. He was still in the guild hall, where she'd left him.
A thought occurred to her. What was it that Mira had said? Supposedly, if you look into itm you can see your heart's deepest desire.
Deepest desire? Then did that make Natsu her deepest desire?
Lucy shook her head; she was being foolish. There was an overwhelming amount of magic power coming from the storage room. It was likely all the power had just muddled up her vision. She continued up the stairs with the replacement staff clutched tigh in her grasp.
But she still couldn't help thinking, she saw Natsu in the mirror that day during their punishment, and he said he saw her. If he looked in the mirror again, would she be there?
