It was about a thirty minute drive from my house to LaughShack and I was able to get in my car at around two forty-five in the afternoon. Unfortunately that only left about fifteen minutes extra for traffic, just in case it was already getting bad.
I pulled out of my driveway and slowly started to make my way to the comedy bar at a pace that isn’t as calm as I would have preferred. The music from my radio was shyly resounding from the speakers as I have lowered the volume to focus on the road. I was not a natural at driving in a hurry and it showed through my little mannerisms such as this.
Unfortunately, I was forced to stop at a stoplight because the person in front of me didn’t want to move faster than a tortoise. My patience was not usually large and so I had the urge to honk my horn at him. However, I was able to control myself from acting so rashly. To calm myself down, I looked around where I was, attempting to put my mind elsewhere.
I saw a couple walking down the street. Being in Los Angeles, it isn’t uncommon for open gay people to be walking down the sidewalk as couples. I envied them, I really did, but it wasn’t in a bad way. It just makes me feel depressed that I haven’t found someone to be with just like they are with each other.
The couple walked across the street hand-in-hand. The taller of the two seemed to shake his hand off and instead wrapped his whole arm around his partner’s shoulders. That was where I put my limit. I forced myself to look away before my whole day gets ruined. Finally, the light turned green and everyone started moving again. Now I had to take my thoughts away from three things: the guy at the comedy bar, the slow as fuck person in front of me, and that couple walking down the street.
I sighed in defeat, giving in to the idea that maybe there was no way out of this. Until I meet someone who’s perfect for me, I can’t avoid the jealousy burning up inside my chest. I’m starting to think that maybe the guy I’m pursuing right now isn’t the right for me since they don’t even show any signs of attraction towards me.
Fortunately, I made it on time with only a couple minutes left to spare. Nobody was here yet, so that was even better. I hated making my employees wait. It’s also embarrassing for a boss to be late and to have his employees be there earlier than them.
Employee parking was at the rear of the building and we each had a designated space. I parked in mine and as soon as I got to the backdoor of the bar, a couple of my employees came. I nodded off to them before opening the door.
Almost no lights were on so I took care of that first. Then, I turned the air conditioner on and did an inventory of the bar and the kitchen. Meanwhile, all of my employees came in one by one and did their own prepping for the night.
Soon enough, we were all ready and I went over some reminders with the staff. Being that it’s Friday, we expected larger crowds tonight, so I told the waiters how to handle each group that comes in. In no time, we were ready and the doors were ready for the first customers of the day.
