Jacklyn skipped into the Hermes cabin, flopping down onto an empty bunk. The thud of sneakers against dirt and eventually wood told her she wasn't alone.
"That's my bunk," a short boy with curly chestnut hair and blue eyes muttered as he walked into the cabin, glancing warily at her every few seconds. Jacklyn sat up, dusting off the little bit of dirt she'd gotten on the foot of the bed.
"Sorry," she smiled. Her mouth hurt.

the 14-year-old clutched at her head, fighting the urge to throw up. Of course her mother could still communicate with her. She was the goddamn goddess of the dark.
Your sisters miss you. How could you leave Allecto. She nurtured and cared for you, you disgrace.
When you beat me, she had soul.
Nonsense. You must return. You cannot survive there.
Then I will die trying.
If Nyx thought that she would actually go back and live in Tartarus, she had another think coming.
Or maybe she didn't. This place didn't feel much like home, and she could simply slip away in the dark of the night. In any case, Nyx was right about one thing.
There was no way that Jacklyn could get used to this new life with her mother still out there. It would kill her to know that Nyx was thriving.
She looked down at her palms and wondered what they would look like once they were covered in midnight blood.
