"When you feel what you feel/Sometimes it's hard to tell you so/You may not be in the mood to learn what you think you know" - Aaliyah
Me and Samaria stayed for thirty more minutes then we left. I'm just now recovering from what Davon did to me. I drive back to her house in silence.
School was boring and Davon wasn't there to cheer me up. He texted me Good Morning, but that was it. He never texted me back. He be playing with me. He's probably with another girl , turning her on, just like he did me last night. He knew he had me last night because he didn't speak to me for the rest of the night. My teacher is droning on and on about how valence electrons have an ionic bond or some shit. I really don't care to listen. All I can think about is Davon. My mom called me this morning, but I didn't answer so she texted me and said she was worried about me and she wants me to come back home. What the fuck I look like? I'll come back when she believes me.
The bell finally rings and everyone files out of the class. I see Anasia in the hall and we start walking towards the student parking lot together. "My mother is pissing me off." I start the conversation. "Why don't you just go back home and work out y'all differences." Anasia suggest. She was always level headed. I shake my head. "Because, she's choosing a man over her daughter. She tried me Anasia." I make sure that ends the conversation. Anasia knows how stubborn I am. We get into the car. I feel like eating a sub so I drive to Subway. "What's up with you and Davon? Samaria told me that you and him are real close now." I shrug. "Yeah. We just understand each other. So far so good." I just really want to see him.
After I drop Anasia off, I find myself sitting in the driveway of my house. I don't know why I'm back here. I guess I should try to make peace with my mother. I just can't help but feel betrayed by her. I make my way up the steps and put the key into the keyhole. I shiver as I turn the knob. I really dislike this house. Too much bad memories. My mother is sitting on the couch, reading a magazine. It don't seem like she missed me. She looks up at me and smiles brightly. "Hey baby! are you okay?" She asks. I nod and head to my room. I don't want to have a conversation with her until she gets Cedric out of our life. I look around my room. It's just like I left it. Clothes strewn evrywhere. She ain't even have the decency to straighten that shit up for me. But she miss me though. Oh ok. I hear her knock on my door. When I don't answer she opens it. "Karma we have to talk." She says, softly. I shrug. "I know you haven't had a father figure growing up. That's why Cedric is here." She starts. I cut her short. "I didn't ask for a father figure. Cedric will never be that." mama shakes her head. "I just want a whole family again."
I truly don't care. She may want a family again but my daddy fucked that chance up by marrying some latina lady and they had three little bad ass kids. He doesn't call me or anything. As a matter of fact, I don't even have his number. She thinks Cedric is doing me a favor or something. Barely. "He's moving in with us, tonight." She spits out, snapping out of my thoughts. Then it all makes sense. "That's why you wanted me to come home! That's some low shit ma." I say. "Don't use that tone with me. I just want us to be a family and you better not mess this up Karma. he never touched you okay!" She sounds really crazy. her eyes have a weird look in them. Oh hell no. All I can do is shake my head no. I push past her and go outside.
I am so sick of this shit. I walk down the street and keep going until I see somethin move from the corner of my eye. I get a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. "Hey Karma." A familiar voice calls out. I turn around. It's Bentley. My hand automatically goes to my eye. The one he boxed. It's clear now. Amazingly. "What now?" i ask. "I'm gonna just cut right to the chase. I sick of seeing you with that light skinned nigga." he says. My eyes stretch. He must be talking about Davon. "he's just my friend." I lie. "I'm not stupid Karma." He says. He pulls out a gun from his back pocket. I start walking backwards. "I swear." I plead. This nigga is crazy enough to actually shoot me. "I would shoot you right now for lying, but I'll give you one more chance. Get rid of him. The next time I see you with him it's going to end badly for you. I can find you Karma. You know i can." He says, stepping closer to me. The gun is inches from my skull. I nod up and down. He keeps the gun pointed at me before he backs away and disappears into the darkness. I quickly make my way back home.
I slam the front door and lock it. My body is shaking badly. I whip out my phone and dial Davon's number. I'm relieved when he answers.
Davon: What's up K
Karma: I don't think we can be cool anymore
Davon: What you talking bout?
Karma: ...
Davon: Karma where you at?...K?
Karma: None of your business. Just quit. (hangs up the phone)
I sit my phone down. I feel really bad about ending my "friendship" with him, but i would much rather prefer staying alive.
(Davon POV)
Karma tripping like a motherfucker. I dont know what's up with her crazy ass now, but she sounds scared. I leave her alone for one day and she start tripping on me. I don't know if she upset about last night or what. I thought she liked it. I don't know where she at but I'm bout to go see what her issue is. I ask Brian for Samaria number. They been talking for a little minute now. he gives me her number and I call...
Samaria told me that Karma never came back to her house after school. The fuck? She must be at her house.
(Karma POV)
"Karma! there's someone here for you!" my mother yells. Who could that be? I trudge to the front room. It's Davon. Now how did he know where I was? He a stalker too? My mother looks him up and down before leaving the room. I stand in the middle of the room awkwardly. "What that phone call was about?" He asks. "I just don't think-" He cuts me off. "I know what this is about." "You do?' i ask. He nods. "Bentley." he says. I guess he does know. Davon comes over to me. "How did you know?" I ask. "Because, he's the only nigga that get you shooken up like that." I nod. "You alright?" He asks. "No. He threatened me with a gun. He said if I don't stop messing with you then he was gonna kill me." i sum it up. Davon gets this weird look on his face. "For real? I got something for that." He says. He can do whatever he pleases. I want to be rid of Bentley for good.
My mama comes back into the room. What the hell she want now?
"Do you two want something to eat and drink?" She asks, sweetly. "Yes ma'am." Davon answers for us. My mama smiles. "Karma can you help me for a second?" She asks. I look back and forth between my mom and Davon. I get up and go into the kitchen with her. Mama gets out a loaf of bread then she turns to me. She has a smirk on her face. " What?" I ask. "He's really handsome. Is that your boyfriend?" She asks, getting the ham slices out. "No mama. We're just cool." I tell her. I help her make the sandwiches. "That's a bunch of bull and you know it, Kay Kay." That's what my mother calls me some times. I try not to blush. "Nah. We just have a complicated friendship." I put it like that. I really don't know what I am to Davon. He says we're just cool, but he treats me like a girlfriend. "What's his name?" Mama asks. "Davon." I simply say. "He looks better than that Bentley boy you had." She mumbles. Then her face scrunches up. "I heard what you said in there. Why didn't you tell me that Bentley was harrasing you." She says. Oh, now she cares. "Because, you haven't been so understanding lately ma." I spit. I grab the sandwiches and walk away.
"This sandwich good as a fuck!" Davon exclaims. He's already on his second sandwich. I made three each. "Watch your mouth." I say, nudging his head. When he finishes his sandwich, he says. "You look just like your mama." I stop eating my sandwich and look at him. "That's a compliment." He says quickly. I shrug. "What's up with you and your mother anyway?" He asks. "She's unreasonable. She's letting her boyfriend, Cedric, move in with us. She thinks he can be the father I never had." I vent. "Where's your real father?" Davon asks. "With his wife and three kids." I bite into my second sandwich angrily. "Sorry to hear that." I shake my head as I chew. "I don't need anyone feeling sorry for me. I'm good." I say, sharply. "You a angry little shawty." He laughs. I roll my eyes. Today just really bummed my mood. I only feel safe with Davon. "Davon, what am I to you?" I blurt. My mouth spoke before I could think. His eyes squint. "Uhh..a really good friend. Why?" He asks. My heart sags a little. "I just wanted to know." I say. "I mean you cute and everything but-" I cut him off. "Just drop it. I had a long day so I'll see you later." I tell him. I get up from the couch and stand by the front door for him. Davon looks like he's surprised. I just wish this was all over.
