It’s been a week since Kurt started texting me. I try to respond to him as often as I can, answering every singe one of his questions. I must admit that he is quite entertaining. His topics never run out and so as his corny jokes.
All the school works were draining my energy. It seemed like the teachers are fond of loads of work for their students. I lightly slapped my cheeks so I wouldn’t fall asleep. I resumed solving my calculus assignment.
Kurt and I have been busy because the quarterly assessments were coming. My phone dinged and his name popped. The message was a plain hi again. I typed ‘I’m busy stranger.’ then sent it. A few moments later, my phone was already ringing. I looked at it again until it ended. He sent a text telling me to answer the call.
My heart immediately raced. What am I going to tell him? If I answer this call it would be our first talk together. He is calling again, this time I slowly swiped the answer button.
Nobody talked. It was very quiet. Am I supposed to speak first? “Umm…bye.” I awkwardly said before quickly ending the call. I walked to my mirror and saw my flushed face. Ugh! What the hell was that? My phone rang again but I ended it. I told him that we should study first and he agreed. It was nine in the evening when my best friend called.
“Hey, how are you mushroom?”
“I’m good bamboo. Why did you call?” I asked. There was no group work or anything else scheduled for tonight so for her to call, something was up. “Nothing, I just noticed you on your phone recently and now I am starting to have doubts.” She really did notice it then, huh?
I was trying my best to secretly reply to Kurt just so they won’t doubt me but here she is. I don’t know what to say because I am not good at lying to my best friend. “Don’t you dare lie to me Mary. For your information, I am a detective.” Then she laughed. Her joke was half true though. “Okay fine! There’s a boy. I have been texting him for a week now.” Her laugh just got louder. “Stop laughing you’re annoying me bitch.”
“So your grandma is a he now huh!” My face got even redder. I can’t think of any excuse because she caught me off guard. “Cat got your tongue smurfette?” I groaned. “Okay! Okay! That wasn’t my grandma. Happy now?”
“Yep, I just called for that. It’s boring here and you know I hate studying.” I nod my head, agreeing at what she said. “Have you called Kaye though?” Kaye is the other member in our main circle. We are inseparable ever since Rose invited us for lunch at the beginning of our senior year. “I did. We have to end the call though, you know… babe time.” Rose was obviously rolling her eyes even though I couldn't see her. “Well I’ve got nothing more to say and I still have to INVOLUTARILY study.” She ended the call.
I quickly finished my homework then slept.
“Ugh I really should study well. I swear I’ll do better next time.” Rose complains. Kaye shakes her head then face palmed. “Shut the hell up bitch, you passed the quiz. Heck you just got four items wrong and here I am having eleven errors.” They both looked my way with raised eyebrows. Uh-oh!
“Umm what?” I innocently asked. “How the freaking hell did you perfect that useless piece of sh─ oh wait maybe it will come in handy one day, but anyways. How?” Before I could answer, two different ringtones loudly interrupted. It was Kaye and I’s. Rose signaled us to answer them so Kaye stood and walked a few feet away from us. I contemplated in answering mine. Rose shamelessly grabbed my phone, answered it then put it to loud speaker.
“Hello?” She asked. “Uh Mary?” Rose gave my phone to me and told me to speak. We exchanged a few more exaggerated hand gestures before I finally said yes. “Is this really you?” I nodded, not caring if he could not see me. I heard a soft ‘duh, obviously’ beside me. “Yes.” I slapped Rose’s leg to shut her up. She raised both her arms in the air then closed an imaginary zipper to her mouth. “Well… this is awkward.” I giggled. “It surely is Mr. Stranger.”
“You said you were taking a quiz today, how did you do?” And now my best friend’s eyebrow reached the ceiling. I ignored her and focused on the call instead. “I… umm, well you could say I did fine.”
“You liar! Hey boy are you listening? She slayed the quiz okay? She got a perfect score.” Rose boasted and Kurt laughed aloud. His laugh was very contagious that I laughed with him. It didn’t sound forced, it just sounded right. Who am I kidding? It sounded so freaking attractive. I blinked twice to stop myself from sounding and looking weird any further.
“Hey I know I’m moving a little too fast but…can we meet?” Both of our jaws dropped to the floor. I guess she also didn’t expect him to ask that early. I looked at Rose, asking for help but she also shrugged her shoulders. “It’s okay to bring your friends.” He informed. “I’ll just text you my answer. Bye.” I ended the call then stared at it.
“Girl what the hell was that?” Rose held my shoulders and shook me slightly. I looked at her. Her smile could reach her ears and twinkling eyes. She looks so happy for me for an unknown reason. “I-I don’t know either.” She squealed and clapped her hands like an idiot. “So are you going?” she eagerly asks. I bit my lower lip, unsure of what to do. “Maybe not?” Turns out Rose is not taking a no for an answer. “Oh you are going to meet that man ‘cause I’ll go with you.”
