"But we have to do something!" I cried, and at the same moment I felt a sinking feeling in my gut that it was already too late.

"I'll... I'll just call the police, okay?" the man dug in his jeans pocket for his phone. "That's the only solution."

"You're making a very big mistake," Andy shook his head sadly. "The police can't help us."

The man's finger hovered over the phone as he looked at Andy with a worried expression on his face. "And what makes you think I can, kid?"

"Nobody else can help us, only you can."

At that moment I realized Andy didn't just come to this house for nothing. He knew this man.

"What are you talking about?" the man sounded annoyed as he dialed the police.

"You're different," Andy said blankly. "You can kill them. You have the power to kill them all."

"I don't understand," he frowned, and then held up a hand at Andy when someone answered the phone on the other line.

"Yes, we need help immediately." I heard him say.

"What are you talking about, Andy? What do you mean?" I  asked Andy in a soft tone. "Why are you acting so weird?"

"This man, he can help us," my brother told me. "The stories, they're real. So that means the heroes must be real too."

I blinked a few times, just to see if this was reality or just a really bad dream. My brother was insane! What was going on with him?

"What hero, Andy?"

"Heroes," he corrected me. "They are the ones who will help us when we're in trouble, who can save our lives, who can protect us from harm."

"What? Who are...they?"

"The Kanes," Andy said, and I felt a lump in my throat.

The Kanes?

Was he talking about Ezra's family? My Ezra? Ezra Kane?

"The Kanes?" I tried not to sound shocked, but failed.

"Yes," Andy nodded. "And this man right here can help us, because he too, is a Kane."
