Wrapped in the confidence that Adrian would save me, I sunk into my unconsciousness.
"Hello, Max."
I opened my eyes, or at least I think I did. I was in a dark room with light shining from somewhere above. I spun around, once my eyes adjusted, searching for the voice.
"You gave up so fast."
It was on my left. I turned and started walking towards where I think it came from. But then it spoke again from behind me.
"It's almost as if you had nothing to fight for."
"You're wrong."
"Oh?"
The question in his voice should not have warranted a response, but he was wrong, right?
"I have my mother."
"The mother who sent you away? The one who abandoned you after he-"
"YOU DON'T GET TO TALK ABOUT HIM." I don't know where this anger came from but suddenly it was bubbling underneath my skin.
"Fiesty now aren't we? Did I hit a nerve? The father who couldn't even stay for you?"
"It was an accident," I remember that day better than the happiest one of my life.
"Was it? Why was he even on that road? He was leaving you and you know it."
"SHUT UP!" He was going for a drive. He said he needed to clear his head.
"He was leaving you because you were not good enough for him to stay for."
He and my mother had been fighting. He was leaving, wasn't he?
The darkness around me seemed to press in and I fell to my knees. I wanted to cry. I wanted to fall asleep and never wake up. But I felt a glimmer of hope pulse through me. My friends.
I stood up, fighting against the darkness, the voice.
"Marinette, Alya, Nino, Max. I have them."
"The friends who wouldn't even ask if you were okay after your secrets were spilled to the entire school?"
He was right. They weren't there for me.
But Adrian was.
"Adrian. I'm fighting for Adrian, and I know he's fighting for me too."
I was more calm now and the darkness around me got lighter. I stood up straight.
"Nothing to say? Good, you were annoying anyway."
Not only was the darkness getting less heavy, it almost seemed like a sun was rising or I was opening my eyes.
~~~
"Max? Max can you hear me?" Adrian. I opened my eyes fully and sat up, looking around. Adrian was standing in front of me.
"What happened?" The street around me was torn up and only now was the magical ladybugs fixing everything.
"You were akumatized." That was Ladybug. She walked over from where she had released the akuma. "Right now you need to rest. Do you need help getting home?"
"I can take her, M'lady. You fought good today but you need to rest as well. I can see you limping."
I winced. "I'm sorry."
"It'll be okay. Nothing a bit of ice can't fix." She smiled at me but it didn't help. I had hurt people today didn't I?
"Come on Max, let's get you home."
"Okay." I stood up to go over to Adrian, but at the last second I ran over to Ladybug and I embraced her.
"Thank you." She returned it and I got a whiff of her shampoo scent. Strawberries.
I stepped back then and tried to return the smile she was giving me. Then Adrian came over and stood next to me.
"See you soon M'lady." He swept into a deep bow and I could see Ladybug roll her eyes as she was swinging away. "I'll get her someday." He muttered, a sly grin on his face.
