december 11th

jonah stared down at his phone, the texts coming in slowly from eben.

eben
can you just pick your damn phone up

eben
you are so annoying, i hope you know that

eben
sorry that was mean

eben
but still. you're annoying, just answer me so we can talk.

jonah
i cant right now

eben
bull

jonah bit the inside of his cheek, watching as eben's facetime call take up the top of the screen. he reached over to his bedside table, flicking on his lamp, and answered the call.

"well well well look who finally decided to answer my call." eben huffed. he was in the studio in their house, and he looked like shit.

"have you been sleeping?"

eben glared at him. "what do you think, jo?" obviously he hasn't been sleeping. he's been up night after night, drinking either alcohol, coffee or energy drinks. he's been making random beats, watching movies after movies, and hanging out with zoe. "when are you coming back home?" he asked, sounding a little desperate.

"i don't know. probably after the new year." he said softly, picking at a loose thread. "maybe a little later than that."

"how late is late?"

"january 14th latest. gotta be with everyone for the album release."

that's too long for eben. "oh.." he started picking at his nails. "can i just.." he let out a sharp breath. "why'd you leave?"

"i needed to see my mom, eben. she calms me down."

"did you really have to leave after i told you i liked you though? like, mid sentence?"

jonah stayed quiet. he shook his head, sitting up. "i have to go."

"no you do not have-" jonah hung up on him, turning his phone completely off and throwing it across his bed. he had no idea why he couldn't just admit his feelings for eben. he knows the boy likes him, he literally just admitted it, and jonah likes him too.

so why is it so scary?

he scrubbed his hand over his face, throwing the covers off his body. he shuffled out of his room, and went straight to his parents room where his mother was. carrie was on her bed, channel surfing. "hey love. you okay?"

"i guess." he mumbled, getting into bed with her. she opened her arm for him, letting her son cuddle up next to her.

"is it about eben?"

"mhm."

"you should tell him, hon. i'm sure he already knows."

"it's.. not about that. 've never been with a boy. and okay, let's say it does work out, we both have commitment issues, to the absolute max. and i really really really like him so i want it to work out but what if it doesn't and we both end up with broken hearts? do you know how awkward that'll be? we live in the same house, mom."
